Advanced Set The Rope On Fire Cartridge is a game made for tigsource's demake competition. It is a platformer with an usual way of winning and is made to be like an Intellivison (2st generation console) game. We were demaking Mazapán's You have to burn the rope:
http://www.mazapan.se/games/BurnTheRope.php

The game starts with you, a young and brave hero falling down a long chute. You came there with the intention to kill the enormous boss who threatens everybody's existence. Standing at the beginning of a long tunnel you must buil up your courage and enter the great hall of doom.

Have you got the courage? Have the strength? But most importantly; have you got the wit?

Move using arrowkeys. Jump with Up or Space bar. Use Weapons with Ctrl. Read signs with Enter.

Joypad is also supported (Use buttons 1-3) or
go Intellivision style by using the numpad!
All controls are explained in game.

What a weird game! Proper retro-feeling (took me back to my ZX+3 and C64 days!) that is unlike anything i've ever played before. Although on the short side, this game is monstrously difficult because you have to do the unthinkable in order to finish it! Very strange and worth a punt, for sure.

I would very much like to see this made into a full game complete with platforming sections. As it is, it's a great boss encounter

This looks awesome. I saw this on another website, something about it being art...

And there was me thinking this was a basic remake of the original!

Personally, i thought the original was an awful game, but i can't even figure out how to beat this one!

I really liked the sound effects and graphics! This reminded me of my commodore 64 & Atari! Wasn't sure what i was surpose to do however i got as far as setting the chandeliers on fire and another enemy appeared! If this was a big game then it would be epic!!!!!!!!

Awesome, no idea how to beat it though! Was there another version submitted a few months ago?

Posted by Dustin Gunn 16th September, 2008

to beat it you set the rope on fire

Posted by -Liam- 16th September, 2008

But what do you do when the rope turns into a fire snake?

Posted by jpSoul 16th September, 2008

strange, when I press spacebar on the sign (wooded arrow...) a box appears, but it's empty, and I don't know how to close it, I have to restart the game :s

For the pieces of you that do not know, this is demake of Mazapán's You have to burn the rope. It reads in the description, but I'm sure some of you don't read it x)

I enjoyed this game a lot by myself, very good job.

What happens when the snake is on fire?!

It was very clever! Liked it a lot! Amazing how easy it is to hide something in the obvious.

Thanks a lot for all the positive comments! It really warms my heart . And I'm happy you don't take it too seriously.

@Phanoo
Ah, I thought I had fixed that bug! I updated it again now so that the sign will automatically close when the bug appears.

@Mark Radon
I'm really glad you enjoyed it and appreciated the retro-styling. We used the 16 colour Intellivision palette and resolution to stay as close to the machine's specifications as possible. We even added a graphics-bug at the edges of the screen when scrolling. I don't think we will make a long game of this, as it is a demake of You have to burn the rope.

@Hempuli
I just recently read your "Hardest Boss Fight Ever" comic. That was good fun!

There was not any other version submitted, however I did submit this about a month ago to TDC. The screenshots didn't work so Circy deleted it. I resubmitted it just yesterday.

It wasn't so much how to burn the rope, but how to get to it that puzzled me.

Blueberry, rest assured i did notice the graphical glitch you added and i figured you added it on purpose since MMF doesn't do this normally! Very very nice touch - that is how to emulate the 80's!!

.....And bring back the Pet Shop Boys

Cool retro design. Reminds me of Montezuma's Revenge. I'm baffled with solving the game too.

Excellent game! However, I don't see that you've given credit to the original 'Set The Rope On Fire' game in your description. To most of us, this should be uncalled for anyway, but I'm not sure that everyone here understands what it's a de-make of. ^_-

@Toadsanime
Yeah, I think the original is a must play for all indie gamers. It also makes more (or less?) sense playing this demake if you have played the original before. And I did credit it, mayby not clearly enough though. A link to the original would perhaps do the trick.

So, uh, can this be beaten? Considering it's completely different from the original - you needn't merely set the rope on fire, but now it turns into a fire snake and freaks out and stuff?? What now?

Lol its so simple it slays me.

OHHHHHHHH
So THAT'S what the thing in the window was!
Cool. Very interesting method. What really lead me to try it was that I couldn't burn the rope anymore? I started up the game and not even the fire snake. Not sure if that's a glitch or what.
Still, though, awesome. Although I'm a little disappointed: I expected a chiptune version of the ending song. Oh well!
