I personally could never choose Metal Gear Solid over Gears of War.
Yet people still try to convince me that hiding in boxes and barrels is the way to go. I'd rather run and gun and cut things in half. I was turned off to metal gear when I heard there were 200 types of disguises. I think a certain amount of stealth is good but I just feel held back most of the time by that style of game. I still have no reason to purchase the ps3.

I'm thoroughly enjoying Metal gear solid 4 at the moment. Although it's a bit bizarre to watch almost an hour of cinematics before you get to any actual game play at times. Thats not a bad thing really so long as you don't mind a bit of story in your games.

Personally I like action games and stealth types.

Oh and btw, you can play MGS4 like gears of war if you prefer it. (ie 3rd person perspective over the shoulder).

The cinematics in Metal Gear are really long and disturb the flow of the game to me. Sadly I think I would enjoy it more with the over the shoulder view. I enjoyed Metal Gear 1 but 2 had the long cut scenes and I lost intrest. All in all I just love the pacing and exitement of Gears of War.

I don't hate Metal Gear but if I had to choose out of Metal Gear and Gears of War I would pick Gears of War.

I loved MGS1 but the rest not so much. Especially 4 "a bit of story..."
On the same hand I don't like GoW. Never been much a fan of the super grunty space marine look.

HL2. Now that's my cup of tea. Uprising rebel styled sneaky aggression.

Goldeneye had stealth down to a T. It wasn't too important that you got seen - it just meant more enemies to kill.

I love the Metal Gear Series, but I also love a good action game. Stealthy doesn't mean boring, it's mostly about finding the best ways of completing a level rather than plowing your way down the middle of a level making use of fast finger action to stay alive.

I love playing a variety of genres, it makes games more interesting, but it all comes down to the player, if you don't like stealthiness that's completely fine

Playing MGS1 right now. Makes me remember being 15 and importing it before it was released in europe. That would make me like stealth games but at the same time I try to kill all the genome soldiers.

MGS1 is difficult on hard mode because you have no radar and no first person view with running. So you basically run around till you hit a soldier or you keep hitting triangle to see what's in front of you

Doesn't that depend on the game? I think it's better to have in game cut scenes so you don't get a transition between playing and watching and it's probably easier to do anyway.

Gears of War has some FMV sequences. FMV rendered from the game engine, yeah, but still.

I always wondered why they did that actually. Unreal Tournament 3 did it too. It looked exactly like the game engine, but with added compression artifacts.

In game cut-scenes wouldn't be so bad if they put effort into them. The developers never seem to animate things decently, especially facial movement. Half-Life 2 has great animation that would fit well into an in-game cinematic.

I'd go with GoW over MGS. The combat in GoW is solid. I'm convinced that the "combat" system in MGS was purposely designed to be horrible to deter people from engaging in it. Now Splinter Cell, that's a stealth game with a somewhat decent combat system.

Besides, Gears can be speedrunned. And, it has two hilarious cutscenes.

MGS1 = The best
MGS4 = A very close second

Gears of War's also good but its really a brainless shooter with fantastic graphics. Can get repetitive after a while.

I think it is best when players are given the opportunity for either stealthy or upfront approaches. Try playing Far Cry on "Realistic" difficulty. You can creep past enemies moving from bush to bush but if that gets tedious then you can stand up and own the shit out of some bad guys if you are godly enough.

The real fun from this hybrid type of gameplay comes not just from shooting people in the face before they can shoot you, but from outwitting the AI which are pretty intelligent.
