Hey, I've done a bit of work on the engine.

Changes since last time:

-Slopes are a bit more finished, in that running quickly off of a ramp or similar will launch you upwards
-Springs added
-If you hold X after throwing the hat, you can charge up a punch, so then you release X as you catch the hat and you can punch the hat forwards towards enemies / blocks / etc.
-More sound updates
-Water engine polished
-Ladders no longer halt the timer nor cause damage issues
-Level expanded for fun times
-Collectible added (experimental)
-Paralax Backgruond
-Very different scrolling system
-Aspect ratio altered

I really like it. The only thing is, the more features and extra fanciness you add to it, it feels less and less like Hatman to me. Maybe when I can hit enemies with the hat it'll feel more like good old Hatman again. I love the new hat punch move. You could add something extra to give that feature more 'punch', like changing the hat sprite slightly. Right now the movement feels like it's an ice level - a wee bit slippy when changing directions. Love the title music, is it original?

pretty nice engine, a bit hard for me though - it seems a bit awkward level design at the moment

Am I doing it wrong or do you need to hold a direction as you let go of the button? I think it'd work just as well by simply letting go of the button.

All you need to do is let go of the button, but you need to have good timing. It's not designed to be super easy.

As for feeling like the old HatMan, you aren't going to start out with all these abilities! They'll be gained gradually through the game.

I like that you no longer have to be jumping to hatsurf.

Okay, so I just started working on the first level.

The game is going to progress a bit like Mega Man 1 for the NES - there are six levels available to be played in the order you wish (though completing some levels in the right order will make it easier), then after they have been completed a boss level is open. Thoughts?

Sounds as good a plan as any. Since playing it in a particular order makes it easier, what all besides gaining hat surfing is there to earn? I'm sure you want to keep some secret, but just one little nougat of surprisedness?

Fine idea. I like that freedom. Will the levels be drastically different appearance-wise? If you don't mind, I'd like to go to a forest in one level, an icy mountain in another, a desert in one, and three other places.

Will Hatman get his powers like in Megaman?

The levels will be mostly themed, yes. The "first level", not forced, but the first one indeed, will be a lot like the first level in HatMan, being a forest level, but it's quite different at the same time. I'm still thinking about themes for the others, but there will definitely be a desert level as another one. An ice land too, yes. The last level will be a crazy mash-up, full of easter eggs and elements from others.

There are tons of easter-egg secrets. In the first level, if you manage to get to the top of the start area, with some trickery you can get your way back into that first underground cavern-style level I made a while ago to show off the engine (the one you've all been playing).

Also, I changed my mind - you will have all the abilities throughout the game.

I really like the springs bit, but it doesn't really feel like hatman, more of Sonic.

I am no longer not a taco.
