I was once very interested in how Minecraft rendered so large environments and stored such large arrays, I always figured they used some clever runtime compression and dynamic arrays and approximation stuff. Then I realized it just brute forces out most of a gigabyte of data and slows down terribly on large environments and I was a bit disappointed.

I'll be interested to see the cosplay pics. Easy outfits to make!

huh? minecraft rarely ever users more than 200mb (and when i play usually hangs around 80mb), which is quite reasonable for a game these days. it only updates 81 sectors or "chunks" of data at a time, which consist of a maximum 32,768 blocks each + whatever entities are spawned at the time on those chunks. unless youre talking about a server which has to handle the 81 nearest chunks for every player in the server. the ONLY problem i know about with large worlds on minecraft is the farther you get from chunk 00, the more terrain, mob, and other gameplay glitches increase due to calculation accuracy and other inefficiencies. other than that you can have infinitely large maps, that only take up disc space the larger they get, not memory when ingame.

as far as compression goes, the server does compression when it sends large world update data to the clients, but as for runtime i have no idea.

One great thing about minecon is going to be the classes. hopefully there will be lectures on how minecraft does some of the things it does. I'm definitely gonna try and go to the more interesting ones, as well as the keynote speech. oh and parties, can't forget about the parties.
