They are much too lenient! They only encompass one problem regarding intellectual property rights, and nothing more. Copyright infringement was not acceptable before the Interner either. Has everyone completely forgot about burning?

As you might have heard, the US Government recently issued two new acts, Stop Online Piracy Act and PROTECT Intellectual Property Act, which will enable the government to easier enforce copyright and other intellectual property laws by blocking websites with potential to piracy.
Statistics however, show that 90% of all intellectual property crimes are done outside the realm of the World Wide Web. The message is clear: we need to protect corporate interests from people without Internet too!
This is accomplished with an act or acts similar to SOPA amd PIPA that will allow the government to:
- Confiscate cameras and sound recorders with potential to intellectual property crimes
- Confiscate mobile phones and computers with potential to intellectual property crimes
- Remove the limbs of artists and writers with potential to intellectual property crimes

This is a very serious issue, people! If we don't act now, who knows what kind of consequences we will be faced with?

Hardly anyone cares on this site because this isn't primarily a US site, nor is it under any real threat.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a US citizen and took part in the fight against SOPA and PIPA, but there's a reason it hasn't really been brought up on this site, at all.

Until one of the users post a game that has a copyrighted song or graphic in it, then the whole site is liable to be taken down.

Have you even been far as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

Actually SOPA and PIPA wouldn't affect just US citizens. The whole world would suffer if youtube or any other site was to be brought down.
SOPA and PIPA aren't a threat anymore, but ACTA is. While the world was moaning about these two bills, several european countries signed a law with very similar principles.
The corporations backing these laws should be closed and their CEOs jailed. One thing is protecting their rights, but what they are trying to pull is fucking disgusting. They are not even trying to protect their own asses, they are trying to destroy the internet because it's bad for their business, regardless if it's fair or not. Piracy is not cool, but this is just unreal.

Well the US already has regulations that allows for the government to bring down sites that host any kind of illegal content, which is why sites like Youtube which are as popular as they are, try to crack down on it as hard as they can. If a site gets shut down though, all they do is re-open themselves in another country where the copyrights either don't exist to be infringed upon, or the policies aren't as strict.

SOPA and PIPA actually gives individual companies the ability to police the internet themselves, rather than having to beg for permission. But the real issue was that it was supposed to not only allow for, but actually force ISP to blacklist websites from being allowed to be sent to US citizens, so that sites outside the US could be blocked. But the bills were so vague that virtually any website would qualify.

With that said, unless the TDC is hosted in the USA, it's not really threatened. And also, we're not really popular enough to be a threat to companies who would want to shut us down for reasons more malicious than legit copyright issues (stomping out competition).

But like you said, it was shelved for now. But the fight is never really over, so long as the government(s) are trying to control the internet. What frustrates me the most is that the US government somehow feels it's entitled police the internet - something that's completely neutral, and that's coming from a US citizen. Especially after they even said themselves, that they don't want countries trying to filter the internet.

I really don't know whether to take you seriously or not. I hope not; this sounds like trolling to me. SOPA doesn't "enforce" the law. It allows the entertainment industry to exploit the law and pursue frivolous and bloated lawsuits against the same P2P piracy communities they helped to create.

No, I'm not saying "They made the movies! It's their fault"; I'm saying official portal sites like MSN, CNET, Myspace, and dozens of others offered free MP3 downloads of copyrighted songs and offered downloads for popular P2P software like Limewire, Napster, and the old official BitTorrent client and in some cases even showed their users how to use the P2P software to download other copyrighted media.

Problem is, those sites are owned and operated by the very same companies and corporations that backed SOPA. Blah... in other words, the media companies helped to create the same problem they're trying to combat now. The motivation? More money. Taking all the money a person has every once in a while is easier than taxing everybody.

I wouldn't mind an internet where it were practically impossible for people to send data to each other.
Ppbbstpt... lol. Sorry, but that's kinda the way the internet works. Look, I'm all for busting people dumb enough to upload pirated materials to a webhost or FTP; and I think MegaUpload and Rapidshare should be worried because they undeniably know their users are uploading disguised pirated material and couldn't adapt to block pirated uploads.

The rest of the pirates are motivated, and it's doubtful the U.S. government could enact a law that would keep a community that includes hackers, crackers, freakers, tweakers, etc; from finding some way around the law or a way around the technology so people could communicate freely none-the-less. That was a long sentence. Even if it means having to fall back to land lines and using modems to communicate to B.B.S. servers, they'll figure something out.

Honestly, I think I would support them. Piracy is old news. I'm not condoning it, but it's not like it didn't exist before the internet. When I was eight, I used to download old Commodore software for my C128, and all of the local BBS' served up pirated commodore software and ASCII pR0n at an impressive 14kbps. That was about it. I didn't even know the software was pirated. Before that, people used to stamp out pirated vinal records and copy VHS tapes. Some kind of "piracy" (if by "piracy" you mean procuring a copy) culture has always existed.

This just sounds too much like the next "war on drugs" and the "war on terrorism". They're both failures. I know you're likely concerned because you're either a copyright holder or you might like to be someday. Maybe you just respect an artist's right to fair compensation and protections granted along with copyright, but SOPA isn't about protecting independent game designers or independent software vendors. This is about busting music and movie downloaders to compensate after purposely flushing their market down the toilet for public sympathy.

I like pork and beans.
