Pretty neat, but a bit expensive for what it is.

Just a bit expensive? For that money, you could buy a 32" smart TV to display your pixel art on.

People are making these themselves with adafruit neopixels

https://www.adafruit.com/products/1138

and an arduino or raspberry pi. A little coding and some soldering and it can be done for under 50 dollars.

Kinda related to the whole mini/cheap computer type thing is this kickstarter project:

http://getchip.com/pages/pocketchip

Here is the youtube video if you can't be bothered:

It comes preloaded with PICO-8 which is a fantasy "console" with a limited amount of ram/cpu and it's own coding language based on LUA.

It's super easy to use, and I actually made a pacman clone for it here:

I've seen that done with the raspberry pi but I hate talking to the serial console. That's why i use arduino. But it's not powerful enough to run games. So I'm glad you shared that.

Is PICO-8 open source? Could I use my isp programmer on my arduino to flash the PocketC.H.I.P.

Wow that is neat. I always wanted one of those open-source handhelds but I never quite had the money for one.

Unfortunately not. I really wish he would open-source it because I want a build for my iphone. He does have a pi version though.

One more single board gaming system, the Gameduino. It's a bit old but I like it. Just another raspberry pi alternative.

Wish click team would one day team up on a kickstarter with somebody, and bring their products to the single ic market.
