Well hello there, you sexy beast...*pats hip tenderly*...you DO actually have a large groin. Ahem. Onto the results of my competition then, which I launched on..Sunday I think There were many, MANY parties interested...and in the end there were a pathetic FOUR entries. FOUR! Well in all of the world I've known you all, and been an admin at the DC since October..thats...well...pathetic, really

The objective of the competition was to make me a birthday present. Now I know that if it was a virus making competition the entire community would be sending me gifts...but actually it was a platformer competition. It needed FIVE levels...and needed to be under or around 1.5mb. I'll be as blunt as I can be, and if in the unlikely case of me saying bad stuff about your games..well its nothing personal. Not really. I've decided to let the 5 level limit slide...so...in ascending order:

4. Fire And His Kidnapped Brother
This game used the standard platform engine, and was essentially about a guy who had to find his brother. Graphically it was colourful...but the gameplay and general presentation was...shocking. Fire tried to customise the engine by allowing the player to punch the enemies and kick them and all sorts, but he kind of screwed up the hot spots because of that, which in turn screwed up the game. I couldn't get past the first level, I couldnt even do the first jump...sorry matey boy for this public humiliation, but...well...at least you made the effort, which is MORE THAN CAN BE SAID FOR SOME. Eh Paul?

-----------------------------------
Rolling in at number three...its Ball Bloke 2 by Chris Branch, aka FireMonkey!

Ball Bloke somehow manages to be even graphically worse than the above effort...but theres a difference! Chris Branches game manages to be pretty fun, and the engine is relatively well done. Although it takes forever to reach a decent running speed. Shocking presentation once again, and the engine sometimes refuses to jump, but overall, not a bad little effort. Getting past the second act of Pixel land borderlines on the impossible...

----------------------------------
Flin The Pie Detective
Aku's game is really rather neat. You've basically got some wonderful graphics and a very competant engine. The levels are graphically brilliant, as they are set around the beach. Everything is nicely done, and animated well. The only gripes I see are that the engine is flawed in the sense that the player lands at random heights (you'll see what I mean when you play it) and its really hard to kill bad guys. Oh, and the levels are very hard. Its got auto-saving, however, and the music is absolutely superb. Its brilliant and adds to the atmosphere. Presentation-wise, the game is faultless..its just...that...engine!

The winnner: Drum roll please, Rikus!

Mr 81 by Seji:

A fabulously retro platformer which lacks the graphics, but engine-wise is very well done. You can climb up walls and everything! I suspect Seji was inspired by that automatic baddie bouncing mini-game in WarioWare Inc due to the graphical style, but I love it. Even includes a tutorial, which sadly isn't inter-active. However, this is a great peice of work overall, I cant find anything particularly bad about it. Well done dude! You've made my day Now make this into a full game.

--------------------

Well thats it. Next year I'll be 21. Will the community still be alive by then? Will you?! Not if I have anything to say about it.

Seriously though, thanks guys for taking the time for this competition, well done to everyone who entered, someone put this on the front page too (Aku maybe)

Whee! Number three!

I thought the second act of Pixel Land was too easy... you hold dash at the start, go through all of the walls (still holding dash?) and up the ramp, into the spring and onto the higher platform. Do a small jump (tap shift) into the spring, hold right once you bounce off it, and you land on the other side of the wall.
Had I have had more time to complete it (i.e. more than a couple of hours each night) I would've spent more time making it look nice... but it was a case of 'Okay, let's get a custom engine, change most of that, add this, add that, make it fun to play and... it's Thursday'.

I find Flin the Pie Detective really hard! Perhaps it could do with less precision (i.e. the bits with the floor spikes, and jumping from one spring across the water in level 2). Mr 81 deserves first though. (Did you notice that when you die, you can still collect coins? Try this on the second level)

I did notice that, and another bug which was REALLY annoying.

(2nd level): Collect as many coins as you can and die. Repeat, say, 8 times and then complete the level. You'll have to wait for about 3 minutes while the game "works" out your score! Still fun though

something annoying about MR. 81 is that it takes too long to times all the points together at the end of each level, owell still a great game

this problem could be due to the fact that every time you die and restart the level, your coins still add on to your last coin total (before u died)

Thanks for notifying me of those bugs guys, I completely forgot. I must say that the reason that the game turned out good is because of the fact that I produced the poorest possible graphics I could, getting away with it because of the retro feeling it provided. There are LOADS of secrets in the game. On level one, when you are dropping down, and you are by where there is an opening, there is a unseen opening to the left also, which leads to loads of coins.

I am happy that I got to prove to myself that I am not wasting time by creating freeware games, and I got to give you a present that hopefully made you a bit warm inside, considering we are strangers on different sides of the planet.

Thank you circy, and thank you to everyone else who provided competition, your games were better in different parts than mine, and please try again next time there is a compo.

Aku; I am not so sure about winning, I rather enjoyed your game, besides a few minor bugs. The movement of my game has no bug possibilities. Perhaps you could learn a bit by using fast loop for gravity

Once again, thanks everyone, and have a GREAT day.

Thanks Seji! I'm already working on it. I have already figured out the bug that makes killing enemies so hard and the bug that makes me fall at random hights.. This last thing still issn't falwless though :S..
