Fake or Foto
News posted 20th September, 2003 by ShadowCaster
Just in case you were wondering, I contacted Alias and aparently the photo on the left is real Looks like I was right, along with the other 25% of voters.

It's amazing that CG has gotton to the stage where it is difficult (if not near impossible) to tell the difference between something that is real, and something that has been man made.

I figured it was a trick question (of course I picked the wrong answer and later realized this, after thinking about it). The problem is, the person in the photo on the left either had a bunch of make-up on him or the lighting was weird, which made it look unnatural.

Yay, i was right :D

Uhm...where's the picture again?

"the person in the photo on the left either had a bunch of make-up on him or the lighting was weird, which made it look unnatural." I chose left for that reason.

i chose left because i didnt realise that the iris was actually reflective. So i guess i was right, but for the wrong reason

Posted by renneF 21st September, 2003

I don't belive it, If you look closely, at the photo on the right where the bottom eyelid touches the eye, it is moist but in the supposedly 'real' one there aint, how come? An also, look at the one on the right again you can see reflections of windows, but on the left, there arent any reflections! I don't belive it! It had me fooled XD

I chose left because either could be real, just that the left eye had lots of make-up and the right should've had a camera somewhere in the reflection. Also, I guessed that it was a trick :P That's really good for CG though.

I win!

Posted by ruffles 21st September, 2003

I chose left because I thought the iris was TOO reflective, or someting like that, don't know how to explain in Enlish XD

Posted by RapidFlash 21st September, 2003

I chose the left because the guy on the right has (what seeemed) too little eye lashes on the bottom part of his eyelid. Plus the trick question idea.

I chose the left becuase by guts told me the left. I'm also left-handed, which seconded my suspiscions. All in all, a very entertaining poll!

Woo, I was right!

Posted by Weston L 21st September, 2003

I chose the left because the of the iris and one other part where there was a slightly large cluster of pixels of the same color which made it look computer made. It was amazingly real though.

i voted left! just because the right side seemed so real :D

Posted by Duncan 21st September, 2003

"Fake" and "Foto" were pretty vague categories... :P

Obviously, niether is real. The one on the left is what we call residual self image: it is the menal projection of someones digital self, created by machines of artificial intelligence as a means of controlling us. Yes, I do make matrix games. Lots of Matrix games.

the right eye was too reflective and clear on what the person was looking it, total fake easy to see

Posted by ChrisB 21st September, 2003

new poll = making (if you couldn't tell from the first & third options)

Posted by SevenT2 - [GameStormers] 22nd September, 2003

I picked the left, if you look closely it is obvious that it is the correct one, the one on the right is too blood like, and the iris is way to shiny, but still very very lifelife.

Well it seems everyone picked the left side. I think we have some fakers here. I for one picked the right side, and im proud of it (fucking fakers).

Well, I didn't choose anything as I only just found out about this (i haven't visited the site for a few days). However, I would have definitely have chosen the photo on the right. The one on the left looks the wrong colour and the one on the right even has reflecoions, and they aren't random light patches they are actually reflections of a window.

It wasn't fair if they were going to put makeup on the real eye. If it has makeup on, then it's going to look fake anyway, so it's a pointless exercise. The idea is to make CG that looks as real as life, not making the life look less real than the CG. I mean; the sclera (The white bit) of the left looks practically black in the corner. The iris' and skin colours are unnatural, the skin on the left of the leftmost eye has practically no detail whatsoever (looking almost certainly like it was airbrushed). There is less blurring around the creases of the eye, which suggests that the image was taken by a virtual camera rather than a real one (since CG has fewer issues with focus). The colouring of the eyelashes is almost completely uniform, they're far too thick, and as someone has already mentioned - there is no moist trail where the eyelid joins the eye. In fact only two things suggest that the left one IS real - some of the bumps do appear raised rather than just bumpmaps (mostly around the creases of the upper eyelid), and the moisture in the corner of the eye. I would actually dispute that whoever said the left was real is pulling your leg, SC. Or they made a darned good job of trying to cover it up. Of course, that the reflections on the RIGHT eye are pretty fake too. The left doesn't have enough reflection IMO, but the right has far too much. The reflection also seems to vivid. EnvMap, I think. and there is an odd shadowy haze around the edge of the iris. I wouldn't be surprised if both are fake.

you know, i agree with dines... the left one can't be real.

Posted by ChrisB 22nd September, 2003

Yeah, I see where you're coming from, and I think it would be better to say 'Real Life' and 'Computer Life'. Obviously the left eye had a lot of makeup and 'distortion', so it isn't truly real, though it wasn't generated by computer like the right eye.

i choose the left , if you could see horse and look at their large eyes (or another animal with large eyes you can look at without trouble :) ) you will realy find the one on the right is really a trick but I congratulate the man who made the right part , if there wasn't the one of the left we could think it is real

I like the idea that we can't tell the differance between 'fake' and 'foto' very easily, most who chose left had an instinct because it was a trick question. I was fooled and picked right.

Seems I Was Wrong Although the idea of the person being a Goth with the pale skin and dark eye makeup did come to mind... Maybe if we had a Natural Skined pic, and a CG Natural Skined Pic, it would be much more fair

Posted by Assault Andy 23rd September, 2003

I think having the picture on the right, with a little bit of nose made it look more realistic.

Posted by Dogzer 23rd September, 2003

the left eye is missing the lil line we all have on top of the eye man..

Posted by Dogzer 23rd September, 2003

oh wait.. I think its hidden right on top of the eye

Posted by Marcello 26th September, 2003

seriously though, they obviously used textures from a real person for the cg on the right. so in that sense, it's really just a deformed version of a real photograph. CG stills are rather pointless, especially a closeup of an eye. It's not really impressive until you can animate a complete person and have it look completely real, which I haven't seen yet.
