Andi's TDC Goldmine #1 - Watkins
News posted 8th January, 2004 by Andi Smith
A while ago, Sejj started up a feature on The Daily Click called the Goldmine where he would feature older games on the front page of the site for newer members who otherwise wouldn't have seen them to play. Unfortunately, the idea didn't take off because Sejj featured just one game which was just one week old, so I have decided to take over the Goldmine to let you newer users play older classic click games.

Watkins (Submitted: August 2002)
Watkins is one of the best click platform games of the past casting you as a penguin having to navigate 35 levels in order to reach the South Pole that has been captured by Davy Jones. Watkins has a rock solid platform engine and has previously received three TDC reviews of 10/10, so it is definitely worth a play!
Comments from the Author:"Watkins is a penguin with a mission and a slingshot. He has to make his way through 35 levels in 4 worlds, facing mooses, scorpions and more, to face the evil Davy Jones."

Post your comments if you want the Goldmine to become a regular feature! I need to convince Shadowcaster people want a Goldmine feature :)

right, that's it. no more love posts. I've resulted in changing my text from pink now to a more manly navy blue.

The goldmine idea is great, as long as the featured games are more than a week old heh

Posted by Andi Smith 8th January, 2004

I promise all games will be over 7 days old. lol

Posted by Shen 8th January, 2004

That's almost as old as you

Posted by Klikmaster 8th January, 2004

Goldmine will be great. Hey, love the avatar Andi ;)

Goldmine eh? Sounds like a great idea. Unfortunately, I never really liked Watkins. I found the shooting at scorpians a bit buggy. How about Ferret Monkeys in Space? It's the game that proves you don't need to put effort into a game to make it great. Actually Eternal Daughter is the best click project I've ever seen.

Andi: I dont even remember making you an admin? ^__^ Oh well, I've been away a while. I think it's a good idea if you actually continue it unlike Sejj did... I might even make a special page for all the results if I can find the time.

i downloaded watkins recently is well presented but i got bored after about 3 levels good game though

Posted by Andi Smith 8th January, 2004

Shadow - Rikus made me an admin at the beginning of time. lol Who do you think made the site blue? ;)

Posted by Snakesoft 8th January, 2004

Great idea and great game choice! :P

Posted by ShadowCaster 8th January, 2004

Andi/JD: I was the first admin after Rikus :) I said I dont remember making you an admin because I havent seen you update stuff (at least not recently) so I thought I must have added you a while back. Oh well.

Watkins is "alright", but it does not hold a candle to ED. The only thing Watkins really has going for it is that its extremely huge. Watkins violates nearly every single good game design rule.

andi is back after maybe a year? I know his previous post is on a 2bit game i think.

If I had chosen Eternal Daughter as my first goldmine game the feature would have been pretty crap - the idea is to feature games some of the newer members may not of heard of and to rekindle past memories of users that have forgotten all about these gems. Jonathan: The game Walkton you refer to is actually Walkertron by David Willis. The game's aren't particularly good compared to today's standards, so we shall have to see if I include them. CYS: I'm back baby!

butterfly 660 was a good game, as was entrance gate.

Posted by The Chris Street 9th January, 2004

Butterfly and Entrance Gate were relatively fresh though.. Watkins is at least 4 years old Do Destruction Carnival, Factor X, Red Metal Dwarf Solid (haahaaahahaaha), Gunner 3, Mr Malibus, Naimistath, etc

We love goldmine! Andi: where have you been? Sejj: Where are you now? Clubsoft and Rikus: Are you forgotten that there is a site named Daily Click? :) (Btw. I have seen Clubsoft recently in forum post. O_O WoW!)

Posted by Andi Smith 9th January, 2004

oki, oki.. I'll do all these games eventually. No rush. WOTSK may be hard though, JD. It's not uploaded anymore.

Watkins kicks ED's ass... Watkins is one the few click games which actually held my attention for a while.

Posted by Mr Coffee 10th January, 2004

Well, Watkins was just to hampered by bad level design. To many leaps of faith, and bouncing up into a bee that you never could have known was there. When the player dies it should be his fault, not the games.......

Posted by Gaspy Conana 10th January, 2004

Nastyman's Adventure games plz...

Posted by The Chris Street 11th January, 2004

Oh, anyone figured out how to get Watkins running full screen on WinXP? I've tried changing all the resolution settings and everything, but still get a dumbass tiny window. It was great full screen, but windowed its a little clunky..

Posted by Penguin Seph 11th January, 2004

I have the same problem Circy, if only the game would run full screen

Posted by AfterStar 11th January, 2004

Nastyman Games are great!Too bad there are no more sequels!

Posted by ChrisB 11th January, 2004

I can live with pixel-perfect jumping, but Watkins was full of leaps of faith and unexpected enemies... it's OK but the only difficulty in it was trying not to die by falling onto something two screens below you.

Posted by ChrisB 11th January, 2004

btw. Andi's avatar is from the Move Your Feet video (www.shynola.co.uk) - I had a hotdog from that long ago

Yesh! Gowldmine week eshth back! :D Owh. Do I haf shomfing in mah teef? *wipes mouth* There. :D Anywayz, if Goldmine Week is going to be a permanent feature here at The Daily Click (and I hope it is!!!), you should specify a Minimum Age for the games you select. Make the age limit around 2 months or something. You should also specify which weeks of the year you are going to host Goldmine Week. But those are just a few suggestions. Took me a whole 60 seconds to think up. :D

Posted by Dark One 11th January, 2004

maybe 3...

Posted by Andi Smith 12th January, 2004

Goldmine Week will be regular - I don't wish to specify when because I am bound to not keep to a schedule. Games will be of a significant age - but have you tried using the current DC downloads area? It's horrid to navigate (sadly I was invloved in making it) - so I'm going to have to use the Search facility until Shadow sorts something

Posted by vortex2 12th January, 2004

Watkins is classic :). I also think locked 7 deserves to be in the goldmine :).

Posted by nev` 18th January, 2004

I planned to do mine yearly :P
