Andi's TDC Goldmine #10 - Factor X
News posted 11th September, 2004 by Andi Smith
It's time for another visit down the TDC Goldmine.. what will we find this time?
Factor X (submitted Feb 2002)
In ye olde days, there was one klik game that stood far out from all the rest, Charles Tumino's Destruction Carnival. When Riko and Beau from Fallen Angel announced they were going to make a DC beater, nobody thought they'd actually manage to do it. But they did. Not only that, but they added some hidden extra mini games which are far better quality than most klik games out there. If you've never played Factor X, now's the perfect time to do so. I hear there is a sequel on it's way...
Comments from the Author:"Factor X is what resulted after the vision to have 'the most violent click game ever. It certainly evolved a good deal from that version. Factor X is a massive compilation of a 23 level story mode with 4 bosses and 3 bonus levels, an arcade mode where you compete for highscores and collect 'FX' icons, as well as 3 secret modes of gameplay."

Errr....no. IMO Factor X is very repetitive. The enemies have no character and seem to be the same, whereas you can easily distinguish between the enemies in DC. Lets face it, the only reason Factor X became so popular was because it promised the "bloodiest klik game ever". Those who actually looked past the mask saw a bland, repetitive game :| So yea, Factor X isn't that great.

I discovered something really neat the other day. I found out that turning off capslock actually increases the chances of somebody taking you seriously. Isn't that just crazy?

Of course in retrospect, with the more powerful tools and higher standards it's easier to claim earlier games were crap. Whether or not you think so though, at the time of its release it was popular, which I think makes it definitely a candidate for goldmine.

I never liked Factor X, DC was far superior.

Tigs: Don't forget that Destruction Carnival is much older than Factor X, and I still really like DC ;)

I didn't like either DC or FactorX. It's got nothing to do with standards, tools, or skills. It's just that both were horribly repetitive games. I know some poorly made earlier games that look like crap by today's standards, but still are fun. Those two had no gameplay and all hype. The only reason why DC is so popular is that 1. The game was the best of the poor hack & slash games popular in the KNP era (besides Trigger Happy). Heck, my unfinished Arena Fighters game got a massive fan base even though the graphics were half-done when it was released. If I actually bothered to finish it, my Freebor Games would be next to VReal, FAInd, and BES. 2. The game had a nice cutscene. Face it, from the UGOTW, we all know that graphics + simple storyline + lots of hype matter far, far more than gameplay. However, I think FX's sequel is gonna be much better than FX1... even if the gameplay's bad, the graphics are something to drool at. But FX1 is little more than fool's gold. IMHO, of course. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

I think both games would be better with a robotron-style control scheme. Keyboard strafing sucks.

"I think both games would would be better" period. barring a little fuzzy grammar

this game was a shit smear. gameplay sucked, graphics sucked, music sucked. Are you smoking weed, andi? If so, please review my game Soccer Freak too while you're still in the mood for giving mediocre games Goldmine status!
