Darran Baker: 1984 - 2006
News posted 27th July, 2006 by The Chris Street

It is with deep remorse and with a heavy heart that I announce that a friend of ours has tragically passed away. Darran Baker, who was also known at The Daily Click as Death Reaper X, fell ill, and died at the weekend at the young age of 22. He was a popular klikker, and, as well as being a highly skilled game developer, he was also charismatic. Darran was a caring young man who could make you laugh through what he typed, and he never had anything bad to say about anyone.

Darran had created many fun and addictive games, including Fly Fun and One Step From Reality. His death comes as a tragic loss, not only to his family, but also to the freeware gaming community, who knew him both as a friend and as a developer. He will be greatly missed, and I urge you to offer your condolances.

RIP.

Looked like a sound guy. Death is cruel, especially with someone so young.

He was a wicked guy, a really genuine person. God I'm going to miss him.

Holy Shit! I worked on the sequel to One Step From Reality with this guy, but I never heard back from him for a long time. Yet I never expected this, fucking hell.

RIP mate, you were a legend.

This is shocking and very sad. I cannot imagine how his family will ever cope, he sounded like a great guy from his profile.

May I ask (if it is ok)... what kind of illness did he have?

I guess it's him, same name and age. Yet that's just a find.

That's terrible news, and it just goes to show that even though we all fall under different anonymous aliases across the internet, we're still all real people. RIP.

RIP buddy. Looking at his personal profile he wrote "lifes too short to be stressing over it". Looks like he was right...

Posted by phanto 27th July, 2006

Broomie that was Darr_e_n, not Darran.

Doesn't matter though. R.I.P.

What a waste...he was so talented. Fucking death.

Posted by Nioreh 27th July, 2006

Those drugs.. Though he says in his profile he doesn't do them. Well, it's very sad. He will surely be missed by the community even if he hasn't been active for a while.

Rest in peace! Keep kliking in the afterlife.

Posted by Spiriax 27th July, 2006

It feels wrong not to type anything after reading this. He seemed like a really nice guy... And "Weekend at Bernies" is also one of my favourite movies!
Even if he said he doesn't do drugs which I believe he didn't, alcohol easily leads to such things.

Rest In Peace.

It's always sad when someone leaves this world so young. Everyones life has a purpose, some peoples purpose takes longer than others. I'm sure he lived the life he was meant to live, and made the difference he was meant to make. God Bless, and may those who knew him see him again someday.

I remember seeing his name way back in the olden days of daily click and seeing his profile on faceparty but I never knew they were the same person. I never spoke to him but I wish I had now he sounded like a cool guy. RIP

Posted by Omni 29th July, 2006

It is always a disappointment when one of the old klikkers passes away. He was born the same year as my brother, too. I hope his spirit can rest easy knowing that, from the things that he gave to the community, hundreds of people, those that knew him and those that didn’t, mourned his death.

R.I.P.

oh shit.. i didn't read first, sorry. Hope he's in peace now.

Posted by Deleted 30th July, 2006

Shit.

Posted by Deleted 30th July, 2006

... there's something like a 1 in 99,000 chance that someone's body makeup can cause them to die from injesting ecstasy. It's doubtful that this is a case of over-dosage or of a "drugy" going over the edge. It's more likely that he was pressured into taking or curious about the drug and this was the first time he had ever taken it. Death from ecstasy is extremely uncommon, but for that small percentile a single hit is fatale.

I don't usually visit or post here that often anymore, but to see someone who was around the same time I was, making games the same time I was, and was even the same age as I am, it's kind of nerve racking.

Thanks for posting this Circy. You're a true friend.

Posted by Ski 30th July, 2006

Curiosity is very much usually the case amongst people of this age

Posted by danjo 30th July, 2006

condolences. no drug is harmless.

Posted by Leon101 31st July, 2006

That's freakin' horrible. I didn't know him, but the death of people is always sad to me, especially when it is posted of someone on a sight that I go to almost everyday.

Posted by Muz 31st July, 2006

Yeah, it's really sad. Ecstasy is harmless for most people but banned just coz it kills those few who it does hurt, though I think it's more of 1 on a 1000. Though I heard it's a lot more fatal when taken with alcohol.

But still, it's very sad any way he died. Deathreaper was one of those few guys I used to hang out with all the time online. Heck, if it wasn't for my aggressive marketing of One Step From Reality, I think that other good GOTW candidate, Snowbattle would've won.

He'll be missed. I sorta expected to see him again sometime when he's not busy, like with ShadowCaster or The Antisony, but well.. guess not . I wonder what happened to all the other klikers I haven't seen in a while...
