Today I Die
News posted 16th May, 2009 by Rob Rule
Independant game developer Daniel Benmergui received a lot of attention and praise in 2008 for his artistic game I Wish I Were The Moon, a short, thoughtful little game inspired by novelist and journalist Italo Canvino. Now he's back again with his new game, Today I Die. It's playable in your browser and in an adfree environment too, thanks to a 'mysterious sponsor'. In Benmergui's own words:

"It’s (a game) about the daily choice of waking up in the morning."

I like that I didn't have to download it but what is the point of this game? What am I trying to achieve? Without instructions, I am lost.

Nonetheless, nice simple graphics.

Careful deleting peoples post's admins. I sort of get why mine was deleted (blood in video games is o.k. but blood in pictures isn't apparently).

However adam's post didn't come close to breaking any of the rules. The only reason you deleted it was because he caught you copying news.

It's O.K. though. The more you try to rule with an iron fist, the more people will get sick of it and come to Gamebuilder. So, more power to you!

It's okay to delete my comments, yet as an admin you just made a forum thread using a swear word which doesn't comply with Rule 4 on the TDC rules?

Posted by Rob Rule 17th May, 2009

Ah yeah, that was me with the slit wrists photo. Sorry if I went overboard, it was pretty graphic and some people must surely view this site at work.

I'm intrigued by this 'copying news' idea though. TIGsource may very well have reported on it, I'll take your word for it. It certainly hadn't been posted about on TDC, and the likelihood is that a few people won't have known. Who knows? Perhaps I've committed a unforgivable sin after all.

If you can inform me of the precise timeframe in which 'news' becomes 'olds' I'll keep it in mind.

How was it graphic? the blood looked like strawberry sauce, and there were no cuts visable. If you're going to ban pictures of blood you may aswell ban all the zombie games/games with guns.

What's the point of this game again?

I think it's unacceptable to delete peoples posts (when the people are obeying the rules).

I was really mad when they deleted my "god kills kittens" thread. I'm still waiting for an apology from the admin who did it, as well as his resignation.

You were quite right there, Adam - I edited the paragraph for TDC and must have missed one of the swears. Now gone.

Posted by Ski 17th May, 2009

When Liam was admin he told me any content deleted had to be reported to the admin boards, so by my reckoning there should be quite a list

Posted by OMC 17th May, 2009

What was in that topic Ricky?

Posted by GamesterXIII 17th May, 2009

You are pretty creative . . . My mind would never be able to concoct something such as this.

Definitely different.

Good find Robert! Best thing I've played this month~

Posted by W3R3W00F 17th May, 2009

That was pretty cool! For some reason the graphics reminded me of Knytt stories.

Posted by [EclektiK] 17th May, 2009

It too me time to see fin how to play, but in the end, it was pretty cool, although I was stuck in the part "free"

Posted by OMC 17th May, 2009

Hmm, after I figured it out it wasn't bad. A cool idea but really melodramatic. :S

Posted by Dark Link 17th May, 2009

what are we talking about?

Posted by Muz 17th May, 2009

Yay, I won. Yeah, it's a game, nice one, cool that I didn't notice it as a game at first

Posted by Dark Link 17th May, 2009

truely, and i mean truely amazing!

Posted by Blue66 17th May, 2009

The game has an interesting concept, but for me it wasn't that much fun. Maybe I wasn't in the right mood or something. The game is very short after you got the hang of it. I think it's possible to speedrun this thing in 30 seconds...

Posted by Mr G 17th May, 2009

Can someone explain us what the purpose of the game is? I tried some stuff and nothing seemed to happen in particular

Posted by Mr G 17th May, 2009

Nevermind, I figured it out

Posted by Marko 17th May, 2009

I'm with Blue66, interesting but not quite fun. Would make a cool 'dream' section in a much bigger game with an interesting storyline. Was it created by an art student??

Posted by Muz 17th May, 2009

Heh, the most fun part for me was finding out that it was a game at all

Posted by Marko 17th May, 2009

Oh i forgot to say, nice find Robert very nice indeed! Good to see non-TDC game news on the news page

Posted by X_Sheep 17th May, 2009

I have to disagree with Mark Radon's last post here. Why is this on the front page of TDC if it wasn't even submitted here?

Posted by OMC 17th May, 2009

Rikus told us it was ok to post other indie game development news. Apparently some people aren't happy with just-TDC news.

Posted by Rob Rule 17th May, 2009

Fair question - a while ago Rikus expressed the intention (the thread's there somewhere) to cover a wider range of indie goings-on on the news page, I'm helping out with that.

Two answers for the price of none!

Posted by Otter 17th May, 2009

I played I wish I were the moon and loved it, but I can't figure out what to do on this.

Posted by alastair john jack 17th May, 2009

lol Blue66, you figured it out.

Games don't have to be fun.

Posted by Sphax 17th May, 2009

Nice little poetic game.

Posted by Nuklear41 17th May, 2009

I don't get the game? What should I do?

Posted by OFFINC/Aharms 17th May, 2009

I'll preface this with saying I have really been enjoying the more News posts by our new mods. But I agree with people who say this post isn't really news, not only is it a SINGLE game posted outside of the TDC, it's also, as it say in the news post, from last year. Perhaps if you wrote a short article about this game creator highlighting his games and then made a news post about that it would be more appropriate? Anyways that's my opinion, otherwise ya'll have been doing a really great job.

I Wish I Were The Moon was released last year, the game I featured was released on the 6th of this month:

10 days is still a fair old time, but I come to them as I come to them.

Posted by Fadex 17th May, 2009

This game is amazing. I love it.

Posted by SoftWarewolf 17th May, 2009

i dont get it.. any hints?

Posted by SoftWarewolf 17th May, 2009

nm, i got it
when it adds "until you come" its finished yeah?

interesting

Posted by Sketchy 17th May, 2009

That's *one* ending...
Cool game - took me a while to figure out too.

Posted by Jason Orme 18th May, 2009

Impressive, really enjoyed it.

Posted by Muz 18th May, 2009

"when it adds "until you come" its finished yeah? "

Hey.. I didn't know there were other endings..

Posted by ..:.Phox.:.. 18th May, 2009

beautiful game

very touching.

Posted by Muz 18th May, 2009

Haha, I like it how both endings are either happy or sad to different people.

Posted by Sphax 18th May, 2009

Hey! That's fun because the end was very an happy ending for me with light and beautiful day.
