Project Overview
Preview Level 2: The Game is a collaboration between myself and band Last Chance to Reason (http://www.myspace.com/lastchancetoreason), a project almost 3 years in the making due to several scraps and restarts. We're now on to a concept we believe can work the best. The game is being worked in tandem with LCTR's (Prosthetic Records) upcoming album, Level 2.

The game is part platformer, part shooter, and almost totally on-rails. It begins by 'uploading' the player into the digital world, on a mission to destroy everything that has become damaged and corrupt - mainly by going after some major 'boss' characters whose minions would all fall with them.

Each level takes place in a song on the Level 2 album, with the player clashing against enemies in a way that syncs up with the music.

-----------------------------------------------

Despite a lengthy development period, we are now on the verge of releasing the Level 2 demo with 'Upload Complete' - the first track on the album. The album will be released on the 4th of April this year, and is available for preorder at shopbenchmark.com/lastchancetoreason and store.prostheticrecords.com.

The final demo build is being sent out to Prosthetic Records to look over, so you guys should be able to give it a whirl soon!

Finally, the demo goes out to the masses. The CD is amazing, too, and I already got my copy. I can't wait for the other songs to take form in the game!

So go ahead and download that demo!

Met the band

Last weekend, I met up with Last Chance to Reason as they continued their tour in California. Took a train up, chilled with them for a few days and got to see them live. They rock extremely hard, and it was great to finally meet up with the guys I've been working with for so long!

Seeing them and going to a live show meant I got to see a lot of people play the current build I'd sent the band. We jammed on it a little in hotels, and they have it set up at their shows on the merch table. Got tons of feedback and a hearty list of things I need to fix. Small errors and tweaks aside, the demo build is pretty much 100%.

I should be getting word soon if Prosthetic wants to give the game a budget, where I'll be able to work on it full-time and produce the complete game - a level for every track on the album!

In summary... awesome guys, badass prog metal music, great game testing experience. One heck of a weekend.
Xbox 360 (wired) controller support + final demo build!

Pretty big hurdle, and one that has pushed the project to a 100% complete demo build!

The game can now be played with either FPS-style keyboard+mouse (with both WASD and Arrow key setups) or with the Xbox 360 wired controller (or perhaps similar dual-analog joypad - untested).

This demo has come a long way. The development process has been... quite insane... and I'm surprised (and extremely glad) that I stuck through it. 3 years of constant scrapping and rebuilding and artwork revisions... all for a 5 minute demo! Still, I'm ecstatic with the way it has turned out. There was a point where I just didn't think the gameplay would work, but it really is a blast now.

A word to anyone working on any project: Make sure you know how you want your game to go before you put months into it! Prototype as much as possible and find out how the game plays best before you build any complex systems around it. Never get too far ahead of yourself. Set a maximum and realistic standard and stick to it.
