Project: BAD TASTE: THE BASTARDS HAVE LANDED! - Impending Doom Software
Project Started: 17th July, 2008 Last Update: 15th June, 2010
Project Owner: Pariah Leviticus Project Members: Travis Touchdown Violet Vivienne
Project Type: Multi-style 2d action adventure created with MMF2 Project Progress:

Project Overview
Preview BAD TASTE: THE BASTARDS HAVE LANDED! is a multi-style 2d action adventure game created by Impending Doom Software, based on Peter Jackson's movie, BAD TASTE, produced by WingNut Films and The New Zealand Film Commission in 1989. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092610/.

The game will follow the four members (Barry, Ozzy, Frank and of course Derek) of the Astro Investigation and Defense Service (A.I.D.S - "Wish they'd change that name!") as they converge on a the small New Zealand town of Kaihoro to battle an insidious alien menace from beyond the stars!

BAD TASTE: THE BASTARDS HAVE LANDED! will have multiple play types, all reminiscent of classic NES, SNES, Genesis and Arcade styles of gameplay, ranging from classic platform style ala Contra and Shinobi, to brawling ala Bad Street Brawler and Battle Toads to stealth-based games such as Metal Gear. It will span at least ten levels and multiple environments and offer the player the chance to play as each of the four members of the Astro Investigation and Defense Service, each of whom will have different skills, attributes, special moves and weapon and fighting styles. Ninja Gaiden style cut-scenes will continue the story between levels bringing much of the humor of the movie to the table.

BAD TASTE: THE BASTARDS HAVE LANDED! will be sprite based with totally new graphics created especially for the project. The sprites will be high contrast color pixel art, slightly cartoony ala Metal Slug with caricatured features that will easily differentiate the individual characters from one another. The cut-scenes will consist of raster images taken from vector graphics based on actual frames of the film, modified to more closely follow the storyline of the game.

The actual storyline of BAD TASTE: THE BASTARDS HAVE LANDED! will follow the general plot of the movie with only subtle changes to make for a little more action. Like the movie, the game will be gory and, well, in bad taste while maintaining the movie's goofy humor and tongue in cheek attitude.

The project team has worked together for several years and are all huge fans of the movie Bad Taste and it's creator Peter Jackson. We are all very committed to the project, and to creating a game that will be fun to play, true to the movie, and boast high production values.

The game BAD TASTE: THE BASTARDS HAVE LANDED! is a fan created project. What we do now we do for the love of a great movie and it's wonderful creators.

The project team would like to dedicate this project to Peter Jackson, Terry Potter, Pete O'Herne, Mike Minett, Craig Smith, Doug Wren and the rest of the movie crew!

Just to let you know, this project isn't dead yet.

Wanted to let you all know that this project isn't dead yet. Life stepped in and made my free time to work on this stuff a bit limited so it fell off for a while. Unfortunately we did lose Travis Touchdown and Violet Vivienne to life issues, but I'm still here and working again. Currently I'm working on my other project, Castlevania: Slots of the Night, which is really close to being done. That means that as soon as that project is wrapped I'll be back full time on BTTBHL.
We're not dead yet!!

Just wanted to say that this project, Bad Taste: The Bastards Have Landed isn't dead yet. We've had a bit of life intrusion of late but we're back on track and making actual progress. I'll show you more when we have more. Keep the faith. We're here to protect the Earth... And the moon!

Here are some fresh pix to spice up the day. We did finally decide on a more Viewtiful Joe look for the graphics with enormous heads and little bodies. This gives us the chance to make the characters actually look like the characters in the movie while still retaining a very cartoony feel to the whole thing. Here, also are some new vectors from Vi. She really does nice work! Hope you enjoy!

After discussing the proposed look and feel of the game last week with Travis and Violet, we decided to go for a more cartoony high contrast look for the cut scenes. Here are the first two from Vi.

For those of you familiar with the Bad Taste movie, hopefully you'll recognize the intrepid Derek as he drools with delight at the thought of being in a video game.

The second shot is from the beginning of the film, as Coldfinger listens to the audio tape that tells of the troubles in Kaihoro.

Travis and I have been working with the character sprites and are a bit torn between a more Metal Slug type look or a Viewtiful Joe kinda thing. Still working on that, but here's one version of the Derek character sprite that we're kicking around. First at actual size, 70 odd pixels high, and then blown up and ugly.

More work has been done on the engine and I've nearly got a test level down but I need some actual character sprites to check timing and spacing, so it might be a bit. Busy time.
Our first vector from Violet, code from Pariah, and music from Travis!

Violet Vivienne finished the first of an extremely long list of vector graphics for BT:TBHL. This first image is of course of our favorite A.I.D.S. fighter, Derek. Specifically it's from the shot in the film where Derek has just watched Barry shoot the first alien, and is somewhat overcome with blood lust. Violet is currently working on an alternate version of this frame leaning toward a more cartoony style.

In other news, I coded up frameworks for the cut-scenes, menu, and platform sections of the game. The cut-scenes will be very reminiscent of those in Ninja Gaiden, though with graphics closer to the 16 bit style seen in SNES games. The platform movement engine is coming along nicely. It's fairly simple with only walking and running, inclines, jumping, double jumping, and shooting, along with multiple weapons (four per character). The graphics in the platform code is all placeholders right now so I haven't uploaded any pics of it, though if anyone is interested I can do so. I did pixel out some images of some of the weapons in the game which you can see below.

Travis Touchdown is currently working on Bad Taste inspired midi for the game. He and I decided that for several reasons midi would be a better idea than WAV or MP3 files. Firstly and most importantly in my opinion is the fact that with midi we can loop music endlessly without breaks which lends itself much better to games where we're not sure exactly how long a level may take to complete. Secondly is of course the file size issues that MP3s and WAV files bring. Travis is a wonderful musician and it was pretty cool the other night when he started playing the Bad Taste theme on his guitar!

Anyway, back to work. I'll see you in a few days with some info about the people involved in this project, Travis Touchdown, Violet Vivienne, and myself, Pariah Leviticus, as well as a first look at the project outline for BAD TASTE:THE BASTARDS HAVE LANDED!

See you then.
