Project Overview
Preview Masie is a 4-player online multiplayer maze game for Gwerdy chat. Players compete to grab a goal in a maze. Each time you grab the goal you get a point, and the first to 10 points wins. BUT! This isn't just any maze... No sir, THIS maze doesn't have any light to show you what it looks like! The maze is completely dark, and you have a very small ring of light around yourself to see only the blocks nearest you.

You and the other players sramble around in the maze trying to find the path that will lead you to the goal. After the goal is taken it is sent to another random part of the maze. The maze is randomly generated each time, so it tests your skills! You have to remember the whole maze after a few attempts at the goal to try and catch up to the lucky people around you.

The game uses the Lacewing extension for the online capabilities. The server given by Gwerdy chat is ignored, as the game uses a custom server. In the case that that server is down, a player may opt to either host a temporary server or connect to the one someone is hosting.

Still under development, and so is Lacewing

Well, I really would like to write a custom server to avoid the crashalicious/glitchfull hassle from before where the Peers decided who was running everything. Unfortunately, Lacewing Server doesn't seem to transmit channel messages correctly in Build 18 Alpha 3. I don't know what other problems it has, but that has been the most obvious for me. I'm still coding both the game and the server nonetheless, but it will be a while before I can even test it - Jamie has to either tell me a temporary solution, or release a new update that fixes the problem I'm experiencing.

I'm also experimenting with the flashlight effect - originally, a white object is placed behind active objects that represent the walls, and these walls have every-other-pixel transparent. This allows the light to go through the walls, but also for the walls to be made visible.

Instead of this, I am thinking of using the Surface object and a flashlight effect I made a while back to vastly improve upon this effect. This means that the goal and other users will not be visible except for within the flashlight radius - it will be a truly dark maze. This also means that the walls can now take on any appearance they with to now - if you want to make any graphics for Masie, feel free, because if you let me do the graphics...well, you don't want that to happen...

If you want to see what I have been using as a test base for my flashlight effect, you can download it here:

Again, it's just a test; there's no telling if levels will be larger or if the walls graphics are final. Take note: the frame it quite large, and the screen DOES scroll!
28 bytes!!

An entire 16 by 14 Masie maze can be represented in 28 bytes... know how? Each bit is a block...if the bit is on, then it is a block or if the bit is off then it's empty space. I can't believe I never thought of it before!

Anyhow, development is going smoothly, and the server is getting a lot of attention. The client has been code-napped of it's old glitchy-as-heck code, and will be replaced with code to confirm things with the server instead. Everything should be much smoother by the next beta!
