In a word, fantastic.
Ina few more words, things get a little less complimentary, but this is still excellent. From the surprisingly good briefing and short intro you know this is going to be something a little special. Graphically it's a mixed bag, but a mixed bag of sweets. There's a mixture of ripped and new graphics, combined with some truly outstanding transparency effects. The ripped graphics are good, but they're a little at odds with the stylised user made graphics, which is a shame because those are actually very good, with some excellent and atmospheric touches (the start of the face hugger animation is particularly cool). The game is in fact littered with these touches, all of which massively enhance the game, with things like the very cool drop ships and the marines speech bubbles giving the game a very nice cartoon Starship Troopers feel. In fact, I would urge the maker to at least consider using exclusively his own graphics for the backgrounds. It might not look quite so good, but it would make the game the game a lot more coherent, and he obviously has the artistic skill. In addition the music is great. It works well and gives the game a very slick feel. So what's the problem? Well there are quite a few. For a start, player movement is far too slow (something a lot of click users seem to do) which means you can spend ages trekking across the map only to die instantly. Oh yes, the insta death. While it may be atmospheric having you're comrades die around you, it's pretty harsh that you can be so easily killed by an alien on the other side of the map. Twice in a row I spawned only second before an unavoidable death. A little health would go a long way, especially considering that death leads to a 20 second penalty during which you watch the other marines wasting their chance to take hold of the victory you've set up for them. Yes the marine AI isn't great. I sympathise with the creator here, because it's something that is hard to do if you want to conserve active objects (and there can be a lot of special effects flying around) but it does detract from the game when one alien is left and none of the marines even shoot at it. In addition, the vehicles always seem to get left behind. Even if you want to avoid path movement, you should consider using objects as guidelines for vehicle movement. Some other quick issues: The weapons are nice, but some seem to actually be less good than the default machine gun, and they are all far too rare. It would also help if ammo was displayed on screen. It seems pretty negative, but bear in mind that these are all relatively small issues, and none are too hard to fix. Do you want to know the really good news? This is still an early version, a "teaser demo". Well I certainly feel teased by this, but in a good way. This has masses of potential, and if the maker sorts out these problems, it could be awesome. I'm really looking forward to the full game. Try it. You might like it.
