Review: LAST DEFENDER

Let me begin by saying that I have only got up to level 2. But i am reviewing gameplay and feel, not the ending.

Presentation-
Quite well presented. Booting up I was treated/tortured to watch the Konamig title, chose controller type, then a well made intro, then onto the title. All that I enjoyed, however I think it would have been a good idea to intially chose the control method on first play, then if needed change it in the options screen. Cut down on boot-up time.
The title is quite well drawn but very basic, start and options. Alas that is all that is needed. Nothing revolutionary, nothing terrible!

Gameplay:
The game itself, to me, was quite bad. Its all down to the gimmiky "shoot an item and collect its powers". maybe its just me with a keyboard (could be easier with joypad?) but that seemed quite a boring/slow/irratable task. As you can guess i didnt use it much. Other than that it plays quite similar to R-Type 3, complete with danger signs flashing every so often. Weapons were quite cool although they didn't feel like weapons, no feeling of power that you get with stuff like R-Type.

Graphics:
Mixed feelings here. The graphics together look quite cool, but if i picked out an image on its own then I thought these were done in Paint (although there were made in PSP4). The ship itself seemed a little 'blurred'. Parallax was a nice touch but with the new build of MMF anyone can do it.

Sound and Music:
Ouch! The sound made my ears bleed, but it did suit the game. Music, on the other hand, was fantastic. Fit the levels perfectly, but maybe im biased because of hearing the Turrican 2 'dragon fight' tune. But midi can only do so much.

Lastability:
I played it for about 45 minutes and will probably play it more in the future. There is a lot there, especially with the weapons and such. Alas getting them weapons itself is a gimmiky task for me.

Overall:
A nice little game. But as ive said before, its not the best shooter ever but certainly not the worst. Should get GOTW with no problems!

Maybe its not right of me to say this but id love to see a 2 player mode, a different way of stealing enemie powers and maybe just a tad easier!
