Note: Development on Puyo Puyo VS has ended. Check out the new Puyo Puyo VS 2.

Puyo Puyo VS
Puyo Puyo VS (aka Puyo-Online) is a Puyo Puyo clone meant for online competitive play. Connect with others to play Puyo Puyo with classic Puyo Puyo 2 rules.
There is also "PVS rules" where you can instantly drop Puyo by pressing up and garbage won't fall when offsetting.
Note that this game is created with competitive play in mind. It's meant for people to easily connect and play.
The game is similar to Puyo Puyo 2ch (aka 2Puyo) and PuyoFura

Download
Download v1.03 (6.9MB)
Please note: development on Puyo Puyo VS has stopped. I am now focussing all my attention to Puyo Puyo VS 2.

Official Puyo Puyo VS server: "ds-net.jp" maintained by kumonochihare@puyo7
Other servers: aquadasoft.com and server.klikfarm.com, these are public servers.
ds-net.jp is now the only compatible public server. Other lacewing servers are not compatible anymore.

Offline java version to play in your browser:
PuyoVS Java

Optional Downloads
  • Standalone Replay Viewer
Works with Fraps, can go full screen.
  • Fullscreen version (Will upload on request)
Note: when there is an autoupdate, it will be overwritten
  • Lacewing Server for windows
You can host a server if you think there's too much lag. Open port 6121 on your router (TCP/UDP) and start LacewingServer.exe. Give people your IP address and connect to your own server by localhost or 127.0.0.1.
Customization
Puyo, backgrounds and sounds are customizable in Puyo VS. Place graphics and sounds in appropriate folders.
For music playback, place music files in the BGM folder. Or add folders with the music files in the folder list (change this in the launcher).

Puyo Puyo VS does not come with any non-default Puyo skins, background and voices. Download them seperately here: Screenshots

Q&A
  • The screen looks funny!
    Try a different display method.
  • The online game is laggy!
There are measures to counter the effects of lag, but in the end it all depends on your connection to the server. If you and/or your opponent live far away from the server, you may experience lag. There is nothing I can do about that at the moment. If you really want to play someone with less lag, you may want to host a server yourself (see above for instructions), or try a different server.
  • Why is my game running under 60fps!
Games made with Multimedia Fusion require high specs. Sorry.
If it's really bad, you may want to turning off "maximum special effects" in the launcher and turn on "Use default skin". Try the Standard display mode if needed.
  • Will there be Fever mode and other modes added
No. I made this game with classic rules in mind only.
  • Will you add character animations?
No. Voices were added because they do have value in competitive play. Puyo/background customization were added so you don't have to grow tired of them, so that's a bonus. Character animations however, are completely useless. So I'm not adding them.
  • Why can't I go into fullscreen?
It seems that for some people, the fullscreen version is very slow. Download the fullscreen version seperately.
  • The game crashes when starting a game
Try turning off the music. It has tendencies to crash.
  • What is the option "Alt. Server" for?
An explanation about using alternate servers: http://puyonexus.net/forum/viewtopic.ph ... 705#p27655
Ettiquette on ds-net.jp
Do not be rude to other people. Ask before challenging someone and properly say thanks after playing.
Being a bad loser, spamming the lobby or any other kind of misbehaviour can lead to bans.

Since I am a Mongoloid, I don't really understand how to create or connect to a server. Is there some easy-to-follow instructions?

Well the GUI i saw wasn't too complex; basically enter a name and IP address...

To create a server it might be a little more difficult. I imagine you need Java and a configuration file for the server. It might suitable by default for this kind of server. I'm not sure.

So the other textbox between the name box and the connect button is for putting in an IP? So it is just for peer-to-peer playing or do you need an IP address of a server or something?

Well based on what Hernz said, you need a Moo server of some sort, whether it's You or someone else's. I'll go run a Moo server if it's needed.

My internet is crap and lags everyone's game so I guess I'm gonna give up for now. Maybe when I'm back at college with better internet.

Does anyone know how to get back into the lobby after a game without having to quit? I can't seem to figure it out.

Well it doesn't help that i'm running this off of a home box ;) I just wanted to give it a testrun. Nonetheless, I'll leave it up for now, even if it sucks it's better than nothing i suppose.

Something else you could try is to look at the official active servers list:

I really think it's more of a problem with my connection than your server lol.

Although, since the game is Tsuu rule, even with lag it is still quite playable.

You can't. I never coded that. You just have to turn off the game.

Also, I left in some stupid mistakes in it. Please redownload it.
Mainly, I forgot I turned some stuff off in the chat box, so now it should work properly.

About the server:
Download the Moo java server from that website. Open port 1203 on your router. All you need to do is run the .jar file somewhere in that zip file. If you want to connect to your own server, type "localhost" as server. If you want other people to join your hosted server, you'll have to give out your ip address. If you're scared of giving away your ip address, you can also connect to hamachi.
There is still a public Moo server at server.klikfarm.com, though they're shutting it down on September 1st.
