It's possible that the barb stopped the blood from coming out. It was stupid to take it out.

He was pretty much screwed either way, the toxins from the barb are extremely dangerous also, at that split second he would probably have realised about the toxins alot quicker than the fact that his heart had been punctured.

He knew that if he left the barb in there, he'd die pretty quickly anyway. I think that if it didn't go through his heart, he would have probably survived. So pulling it out was the only solution - shows how brave he was though I guess. Such a shame that he was so unlucky though..

Odds are a hit to anywhere in the chest would trigger a heart attack, and I'm not sure, but I think those are bad things to have when you're underwater.

Publicity stunt!

Hey, if something put a 20 cm barb in my chest, I'd pull it out immediately. I mean it's not like I'd know if I was bleeding to death, all I'd care about is getting rid of the pain. He was pretty much doomed either way, all the pressure from being underwater would've made him bleed faster.

Though personally, I'd rather not see any videos of anyone dying... *especially* if it was an instant death one and even more so if it was someone I know. The videos of random hostages having their heads chopped off is disturbing enough .

But I could actually imagine him pointing at and poking the ray, judging from well.. a lot of Crocodile Hunter documentaries I've seen. I'm sure most fans of his work would agree... but I guess they'd rather assume it was accidental, which is kinda unheroic.

Yeah, it was kind of a cheap death. It'd be cool if he went out finding giant crocs or something...But a stingray? Who saw that coming?!

Hey, he villanized the stingray. That's got to be worth something. Before this, stingrays were just those big cute things that even children would try to poke.

I also heard that the ray that got him was upwards of 220 pounds. 220 POUNDS!! I thought it was a little one, holy crap isn't that in the Manta Ray range??

Oh, and I thought that it was his natural instinct that made him pull the barb out like that. It was such a surprise to him it was probably an instant reaction deal. And think about it- if he left it in he'd be tethered- by the HEART- to a freaked out and thrashing 220 stingray! He was doomed either way.

I'd rather the footage be destroyed personally, but I also heard that even his wife is considering showing the tape, or some of it at least. Something about how Steve always told everyone to keep the cameras rolling no matter what- even if he gets killed he wanted that on tape. If that's true, I still think he wouldn't want this shown since this stingray attack was not the focus of the documentary at the time. If he was trying to corrale a giant croc and gets his leg torn off, I can see that, but shooting underwater colorful coral reef fish and getting jacked by a hidden ray- I dunno.

I would have thought Manta rays would have been abit more, they get big enough for a fully grown man to ride on
