Nearly all free webhosts turn to shit at one point. I remember Geocities and Freewebs being kind of good about 6 years ago, but now they're also total crap.

Download speeds are dependent on your internet upload speeds. Therefore don't host big files.

*By free i mean that the only costs are internet fees and electricity bills etc.

It's pretty simple to set up, there are even some packages out there which combine php and apache, along with MySql and even an ftp/mail server.

See here: http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html

More downsides:

You have to configure a bunch more to make sure it's all safe.
You have to dedicate your computer to being a server or it can become pretty slow.
If there's a firewall or if you're behind a router, there's probably even more to set up.
You need a fast internet connection, AT LEAST decent ADSL.
You still need to buy a domain name, or use crappy .tk thingees. Probably.

So um, yeah.

Kai, did you have a website on Sitesled? If you don't, goodbye website!

you can use a no-ip domain, which redirects to your ip.

It's free.

I second using godaddy.com. I thought they were only good for cheap domain registration (which isn't as cheap anymore) and didn't take their hosting options seriously. But when Atu'los Online needed serious, high bandwidth hosting (Camm wanted people to download the game from an official site, not dodgy free download sites) we tried godaddy.com and have been pleased with it ever since. But as they say, all good things come to an end. My guess is that big hosting joints like 1and1 and godaddy are just trying to consolidate (read "monopolise") the market and will raise prices when it becomes more of a sellers market. But until then, make the most of it.

I decided to go with 1and1.com.

My site is partially back up now, with LEGALIZE IT! available to download. Everything else is going to have to wait til I go home for the weekend (where I'll actually be able to use my FTP).

So yea, GO DOWNLOAD LEGALIZE IT!

My main thing with Sitesled is that they never tell you when they're going to shut it all down for 3-16 days sometimes. It only seems to happen about once a year now, but still they have users' e-mail addresses you'd think they'd contact us and say something first.

I always hated SiteSaladThing, it's just... bad.
I never used it, but I know that it's amazingly unstable, and include big forced ads (Automatically added) and it blocks hot linking.

Google can help you find good and free hosts for your needs.
