Basically, 95% of the mail is automatically processed using OCR machines, but about 5% can't be deciphered. That mail is then photographed and the images are sent over the network to the remote encoding center where I work. They come up on our screen, along with a prompt asking for whatever information it's missing, and we key it in. Repeat 500 times per hour and that's my job. It's bloody boring, but I get to listen to my iPod at work and at they pay obnoxiously well for the easy work we do (I make about 50% more doing this than I made as an assistant manager at a movie theatre).
