I keep wanting to make a custom arcade cabinet that runs PC games (like the MMF one Jason Orme made a while back.) but I don't have the resources or the time and space to work on one. I really want a game room with a pool table and arcade machine.
I remember seeing a MK2 cabinet just like this one at a seaside resort in England once - i just HAD to play it and it kicked my a$$ (probably coz my jaw had just fallen so far down it stopped my hands from hitting the punch buttons!). Walking away from it i just couldn't stop gawping at the huge picture of Raiden on the side of the cabinet and wanted to play it all day long - I had to buy this for the Mega Drive and got it for my birthday in October that year.
What memories!
heh i too remember mortal kombat 2 kicking my arse. I saw a demonstration of the game running in our local woolworths one day (dunno if it was the megadrive or snes version though) i couldn't stop myself looking at it until we left the shop.
I actually rarely played arcade video games. we always stick to those silly 2p sliding games where you have to keep pumping it full of money for an hour to get a crap plastic keyring or china ornament. I got a small Crash bandicoot plushie keyring once though which was nice.

There are some good arcades here that just charge an entry fee then let you play all the games for free. Just gotta show some common courtesy and let someone else play when you get a game over.

I want to go there! That would be fun for a nice way to kill a few hours. I bet they're successful too.
theres nickel arcades here in california. nickel nickel. most games are 1 to 5 nickels. and theres a free section off in the corner. its more of a chucky cheese type place though. with tickets n crap.
Ricky, i so wanna go there too! Arcades were/still are a rip-off when you consider a console/PC game is much more value-for-money. You still can't beat the buzz of a well made arcade game though, despite the cost of playing. Here's one i discovered recently and pumped £4 into, and still wanted more.....
I'm not even that big a fan of oval racing, but this game oozed charm and atmosphere, along with that "man if i have one more go i can win this race!" factor that well made arcade games have.... and then they suck the quids/dollars out of your pocket!
Not really the start, but it was a big part of the gaming chapter, in the same way that each generation of consoles was. And of course some arcade games spawned some of the most successful franchises in gaming history, for example Mortal Kombat, Ridge Racer, SEGA Rally, Tekken, PACMAN and of course, Street Fighter.
