SUMMARY

Darklight is part one of a trilogy of sci-fi/cyberpunk games I am making. This game will borrow elements from modern 3d games such as Deus Ex, Halo, etc., and elements from classics such as Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and Super Metroid.

THE STORY

The story follows a man named Jared Ravine, who works for a senior government agency called ION (Imperatorial Operations Network), in a future Earth where all nations have collected together under one rule after World War III.

The story will be unique and engaging and will have many twists and cliffhangers before the end.

GAMEPLAY

The gameplay will be a side scroller with a keyboard/mouse control scheme (à la Abuse), where you move, crouch and jump with the keyboard, but shoot and use items with your mouse. The game is still in its formative stages, but here is what is currently planned:

● Stealth elements like the Metal Gear/Deus Ex series: evade cameras, sneak up behind enemies, make for the silent entry or the guns 'n' glory way, it's your choice.

● Cyberpunk elements: hack into security computers, decode keypads to break into secure areas, upload viruses to disable security bots and gun turrets.

● RPG elements: gain experience from defeating enemies, hacking and sneaking (you are not penalized for not killing enemies if you acheive success without doing so). Apply skill points to specific skills which add to your abilities and effectiveness.

● Engaging sci-fi thriller storyline

● Original music score

● Voice-acted dialogue

● Anime-style cutscenes

I'm coming from experience, as I created the popular games MegaBattle and Law Enforcement 2020 a few years ago. Darklight should be due for release in early 2009, with a demo released before then.

If anyone has suggestions or questions about this game feel free to post them below and I will do my best to answer them.

Hacking Minigames

I'm currently in midst of a process of elimination in getting all of the basic game elements nailed down, so I get a clear picture of how much more is ahead of me. One of the things that hasn't solidified yet is the hacking system.

If anyone here is familiar with the FPS/RPG Deus Ex they would probably have an idea of what I'm talking about here. Basically, when you'd hack a keypad or some such thing, you'd have a little minigame pop up where you'd have to connect nodes or what have you.

Many different minigames have been implemented like this in gaming history like this. One example that comes to mind was in the original Dead to Rights game for the PS2. When you were picklocking a door, a timing game would pop up where you'd have to press a button when a click sounds.

The point of all this rambling is, A. I want to add minigame elements with an adjustable difficulty (depending on how "strong" the lock or keypad is), and B. I want to make them unique, engaging, challenging and fun.

I don't want to make an annoyance that people will put up with just because they want that damn door open, if you catch me. I hope to update with some screenshots soon, but I was hoping for some input on this as far as some easy-to-code minigames from the Klik community. Any suggestions and ideas would be great.

Inventory Screen Implemented

I made some good progress today. I have basically gotten the stats/inventory screen 80% done, and it is looking sharp.

I am adding a lot of little details to this game, for example, when you hover over items, a tooltip will appear describing the item in question. It's not a big feature, but one of many which I hope will set a new high standard in Klik games.

This game will feature a simple yet complete RPG system, with four stats which affect your immediate gameplay. For example, you will cause more damage to enemies by increasing your Marksmanship skill, but if you are the sneaky type, you could increase your Stealth skill, which makes you less conspicuous and makes suprise attacks much more deadly. The agility skill is the most immediately noticable as it will actually make your character run faster and jump higher. When the player gets this skill up high enough, he will even be able to double jump. The hacking skill doesn't affect combat, but will be very handy, as you will have the option to hack a keypad instead of finding the keycode (if available), hack ATMs for extra cash, and disable security systems.
