Project Overview
Preview Ultimate Pong Kombat was started in 2007 but set aside when life interfered. Of late, my step-son has renewed my interest with his own enthusiasm and some great ideas for Fatalities and I've taken up the task again.

The original Pong Kombat was created by Stefan Gagne in 1994 for a school project. It was a sort of cross between Mortal Kombat and Pong. Ultimate Pong Kombat is my own take on the idea, and has nothing to do with Mr. Gagne's original aside from being an homage to both PK and MK. You can read about Mr. Gagne's original here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pong_Kombat Using the graphics from the Mortal Kombat series (mostly MKII and MKIII) to make a pong/tennis type game using a heavy spiked mace instead of a soft yellow ball. The mace can be deflected by one of 16 different MK characters (14 regular and two hidden) by means of punches, kicks, blocks and special moves. While blocks slow the mace down, attacks of any king speed it up and make the game more exciting. Like any game of pong, if a certain number of balls (maces) get past your paddle (character) you lose, but unlike regular old every day pong, loosing in UPK can cost you your life!

Features:

16 playable characters, each with their own stats, speeds, powers and what not... (two are hidden)

Special moves for each and every character based on their moves from the MK series. If you know the character's special from the series, you can probably figure it out in UPK.

Fatalities for each and every character. Each character had a unique and gruesome fatality to preform on his hapless victim once he's been vanquished.

Bios for all the characters. Each character has an interesting story line as to how he or she came to be in the Ultimate Pong Kombat Tournament, as well as a unique "Ending" if the game is completed with them.

Fast paced pong-styled action with a fully customized pong engine allowing for ball control via friction of the paddle as well as paddle placement.

Two-Player mode via fully configurable keyboard or joy-pad control, or play against four levels of AI difficulty. Easy, Medium, Hard, or Ultimate.

High score tables.

Fully compatible with MAME cabinets, as it can be set up to use the same keys as MAME (ie. 5 for coin-up, and 1 for start, etc.)

Uses the art and sounds from the Mortal Kombat games, but with extra special tweaks to make them new and fresh... You'll see what I mean.

Here are a few pix to get you started...

The game is mostly finished though I'm tweaking the AI a bit and finishing up some of the fatalities. As long as Ian, my step-son keeps on me about this it shouldn't be too much longer till it's done.

More updates soon.

UPK isn't dead. I promise. I'm still working on this and my other two projects and time and work willing I'll be finishing this up. Still lots of work to do on the AI but the graphics and sound are pretty much in the bag. More soon.
And now it's time for death!! Death! Death! D-E-A-T-H!

I've been working hard this week finishing up the sprites for some of the fatalities that I started way back in 2007. The code was there, but only placeholder graphics. Now, obviously, since just about 98% of the graphics in UPK are ripped straight from the arcade versions of MKII and MKIII you might be wondering what exactly it is that I need to do... Well, several of the fatalities are something completely different from ones we've seen in the MK series games and thus there are no pre-made graphics to suit. So, here I am editing existing frames of animation to add new and exciting stuff. Also this week I have been working on more stable joystick/keyboard control as well as totally user configurable setup of the two. Had I thought about this when I first started the project it would have proved much easier. As it goes now, this is sort of a hybrid retcon. Alas. Hopefully sometime next week I can put up a game play video to give you some idea of what you're looking at here. I might even throw in a fatality. If anyone has any suggestions as to what the best software for grabbing movies from your computer screen, I would be eternally grateful.

Until next time.
