Show and Smell
Posted 6th Jun 10, by OMC
Been a long time since we last had share and compare day here at Splotches Project Page Elementary School. Time to revive the old tradition, shall we?

Download this file: http://jollycrouton.com/Uploads/Titlecompare.exe

And tell me which title screen you like better! And also if your computer can even run it. I have a feeling 90% of you will report slowdown.

Hit the Play button to switch between them.

Prease and arigato very muches.

I'm redoing old or buggy things while I wait for beta testers to actually beta test. Been making some tricksy puzzles too.

Works fine on my computer I like the 3D'ish scrolling background. I think I like the cloud one over the two...

Awesome, thanks Sumo!

First one for me. The cloud one looks kinda too babyish... Soft bouncy white cloud with colourful typography screams children's show Almost Teletubbies.

And you don't think the first one's text is too blurry? I made the second one with a high original resolution in mind to prevent it, but it wouldn't fit the original background object.

Thanks for your vote!

Posted by Ski 6th June, 2010

Nope. I dont like the second one's bevel effect, it just looks really photoshoppy. Im quite keen on the first one's animation.

Posted by OMC 6th June, 2010

Alright, cool. I was going for the same look as the splotches, but it didn't turn out quite the same.

Posted by Sumo148 6th June, 2010

well the first one seems like its lacking something, idk. Thats why I picked the second one over the first

Posted by OMC 6th June, 2010

I haven't decided yet, your vote still counts!

I actually like the first one better, I thought I'd like the 2nd. But the white cloud isn't doing much for me, although the 2nd one does have a more pleasing set of colours.

Posted by OMC 6th June, 2010

Here's a question. Would you like the shinier letters better if I came up with a better background object? I tried several things already, but I could always come up with more.

Posted by Marko 7th June, 2010

I didn't like the red stripe in the first one, and i'd prefer the letters being slightly bigger as well as being closer together in front of the cloud in the second one tbh. I'll vote the second one (just about)

Also, the 3D room is ace and there was no slow down for me

I'll experiment with spacing. Thanks Marko.

Could you add a framerate in the Application title? I can't tell if it is slow or not for either of them. One thing is for sure, the transition is very laggy.

Posted by OMC 7th June, 2010

Yep. Same link!

Mind sharing some specs?

Posted by LB 7th June, 2010

Oh gosh yeah, it averages at around 20 FPS for me. And when it transitions it goes down to 10 FPS coming down, then after it gets 70% the way down, it goes to 3 FPS. Then it snaps to the other menu instantly.

My computer is ancient, 32MB video card, Windows XP Home Edition SP2. I don't know any other specs besides it's game playing abilities are lame. Also my RAM is starting to fail, if that counts as a spec.

Click start > Run > "D x d i a g" (no quotes or spaces)

Should give some some specs.

Oh and I forgot to say, I like the first menu better.

Thanks!

both work perfect on my computer.

I like the first one better.(the one WITHOUT the cloud)

both are very nice and polished.

Thank you!

I like the second one. Great music!

Posted by OMC 17th July, 2010

I think the cloud voters are starting to outweigh the stripe voters, since I posted it in a few other places.

Thanks for the comment! The music's Johan Hargne's.
