First 1vs1 battle

My cousin visited me today, and we just finished our first game of "Tank Game". Sadly, I lost. However, delightfully enough, everything worked surprisingly well. We only came across one bug, related to Armor Piercing rounds leaving the barrel of the vehicle too far away from it, making close combat with it near impossible. Other 'problems' were more of balance related things we both agreed on.

The game went somewhat like this:
I started with Gyro Scouts and went for the Gold Mines early, leaving most of the tiles with gold near the starting position untouched. My cousin went for combat drones and mined most of the gold in his starting position. I took the Gold Mines so quick though, that he followed with Gyro Scouts soon after. Just for laughs I built a machinegun turret with an engineer, near the starting position (waste of gold at that point). Then he started advancing with the combat drones, and I had to back away with my scouts, because they just are no match against them. He brought an engineer also, so it was pretty much impossible to destroy the combat drones with anything I had. I had gathered enough gold to unlock a new unit, and decided to go for more quick units, and thus unlocked the Gunship. Built one, but was pretty much stuck with his combat drones guarding the middle areas. Managed to secure a gold mine near the top though. He kept stalling me until he was able to unlock Launcher, and Guided Missile for it. From there it went all downhill for me, as those missile hit my stuff like 75% of the time, even if he couldn't use them every turn. From there I was able to build a combat drone and another gunship, but little by little they all perished under the combat drones' explosive shells and the Launcher's missiles. Spent my remaining turns repairing my stuff with the engineer, placing occasional mines and trying Gyro Scout tactics.

Attached is a screenshot of the end situation. There's no unit cap set yet, so the icons go on top of the info panes. The cap will probably be either 9 or 10 though. That's about the limit after which there may be occasional slowdowns on my machine. Just need to tweak the code a bit, get unnecessary loops weeded out and hopefully playing with 10 vs 10 units runs smoothly, even with multiple projectiles and particles moving around at the same time.

What we agreed on is that the game is a lot of fun already, and things like trees work really nicely for a semi-realistic cover system. Once we get a bit more stuff in, we should have a really nice amount of content for a first release.

Still, give me a few weeks at least.

That sounds really fun Can't believe you lost in your own game even if it was your cousin. Cant wait to try it out!

We both play strategy games a lot. He more than me, I think. And I kinda suspected rushing with light units might not work, but I wanted to test their balance in practice. When playing against myself, they seemed too quick, but apparently a fellow human might just come up with more surprising counters.

Oh, and those guided missiles were insane. I've already nerfed them according to plans, in fact. More energy cost so you can't shoot them as often, a six second guidance limit, and 50 gold increase in unlock cost. Plus they turn slightly less swiftly now.

Heh, this is turning out very good. You're going quite smoothly with the progress, this game is looking to be quite a hit!
