R.I.P.? ..... where's the updates? ... you guys taking a break or something?
Valiant effort but alas in vain just as all the rest of the "TDC community" labeled projects?

You do know that almost every project on the projects page is open to accepting team members. Every project is a potential community project.
That's a lot of competition for people's time.

Hell, I couldn't get anyone to help me out back when I was trying to get things working for the 2.5d engine project (which will help alot of klikers make beatemup style games once it is completely finished). So far I have everything done for the basic 2.5d platforming movement, but that is just a tiny start, it'll eventually be a full-blown engine to create beatemups with.

So don't feel bad dude. You gave it your best shot ...

Kinda turned into a mess, didn't it? It had momentum in the beginning, but I think we all wanted to make it our own. Confusing stuff.

It may not be dead, I know a few people were working on engines and editors and stuff, but any updates on those seemed to be ignored Even by me. I don't really care any more. For something like this, I think I'd like to be in complete control. In fact I'd rather just make something alone, but I think that's how a lot of people are here, until they find something they can't do or can't be bothered to do...

What we needed was everyone with the same vision. Maybe next time

I started making the new engine, but I see it would be a waste of time now, unless I steal Jon's idea. (Which I won't.) Should we just delete this project, or keep it up as a lesson for all that you need a bunch of determined folks to make a community game?

Well, the problem is that Almost Everyone is busy working at something else.

That's why the "everyone make just one level" concept would be much better.
It might not look perfect, but you'll end up with people actually creating some stuff besides just one or two people.

It's not a waste of time really, just can't let it get out of hand ... the "This is gonna be one big project because everyone will work at it" mentality just does NOT work. It's been proven time and time again. Now you see why.

Just make a basic storyline, keep it simple, make a few starter graphics and a beginning open-source engine to start things off.
You need to be the one to make the first level, then hopefully others will add their levels to the project.
The others then, in turn, could use what you have and change it around a bit for their level, OR add new graphics and playing style for their level. ... Leave everyone their independence, IT DOES NOT MATTER IF STYLES CLASH, get everyone to make SOMETHING, in a ONE-LEVEL design ... yes it will be inconsistent, yes it may have non-uniform graphics, but also, yes it will actually have a chance to survive until completion.

After a few successful community projects like that are finished, then people will gain faith in "Community Projects" again and you'll be able to attempt something a bit more complex and uniform. You could also just smooth out the rough edges of everyones different styled levels after-the-fact to obtain a certain degree of smooth quality.

I'm not saying to give up, it's a worthy cause, it's just not an easy task to undertake. People have to believe that it will happen before it actually happens. Make them believe!

I'd suggest a "lets try a linear non-uniform graphics community project to allow survival until completion" mentality, and a new Community Project in place of this one. You don't necessarily need to delete this one, but leave it for reference as a learning experience of how not to do a community project, and start the new project as "The New Community Project: the quick and easy way", or something ... it still might not work, cause like I said, everyone is working at something, but if you make a few things right from the start and have it ready for everyone to add their levels to, there will be a greater chance of success.

Sorry for being so long with this ... you might want to read it all carefully though ... it's good advice.

I was well-prepared to make a level for this, but there was nothing to add the level to! ... that's why it failed. Group projects with a huge number of people need to be designed in such a way that it can be added to easily ... can always worry about smoothing everything out and making it look more uniform and all that after everyone has made something for it. It might end up ugly, or funny, or strange, but at least it would end up at all, instead of just dying out completely.

Perhaps if the engine that was made had been open-source, so that others could actually add to it?

Dude, that's exactly what I said in the very beginning! Consistency doesn't matter, what we have is a number of people able to potentially make a gargantuan amount of content, collectively.

Did anyone see how much extra community-made stuff there was for Knytt? We need to do that!

################################################################################################
But someone has to code either a beginning "opensourced" engine and level, so others can add to it (my preference)

OR someone needs to make the engine for the ENTIRE game and a Level Editor (much more difficult to start)
(plus more annoying to make levels for)
################################################################################################

This "someone" will not be me if you are going with the Level Editor route. I do not yet have the knowledge to make a level editor.
I have never even attempted to do anything remotely close to what is required for level editors.

Mostly all I do is work within TGF1 and its interesting limits. The only extension for TGF1 I've even bothered with was fastloop, which I learned enough to be able to use, but I now know of an easier way imo (and possibly better) that runs just fine without extensions, so I don't even use fastloops anymore.

I might attempt a level editor at some point, but it will not be anytime soon.

As for a regular platformer engine open for others to add to, well, I may work on something since Wiese is so relectant to open his source, but remember that this is not my project ... it is Jon Lamberts' idea, and in all reality, he should be the one to code it.

Hey Jon, you mind us taking your idea and running with it? ...
It might be a good idea to start a new project page for this, to start with a clean slate.
You there Jon Lambert? ... you wanna start a new page or should one of us? ... or have you given up completely? ...

There's more work involved than typing down ideas to get something like this up and running ... are you willing to start us off with something?
Well, I'll start working on a regular platforming engine and see what I can come up with ... I may need some help as I go though, as I usually only mess with experimental stuff ... something tried and true is usually hard to top.
I'll give it a try though ... (putting my 2.5d on hold anyway because only 5 or so people even posted on my page
Besides, it kinda bothers me that I found a minor thing wrong with it and I'll likely make a better code before releasing what I have right now).

It might take me awhile, or maybe less time than I think ... I should try though.
Hmm, has anyone done slope support without detectors yet? ... maybe I'll try that.
So, yea ... off to start on a platforming engine ... laters for now.

Hmm ... you know .. I realised I forgot to check the front project page, lol ... after reading it, sounds like you have a plan. That's good ... the above words now seem a little out of context but oh well. ... the thing about Knytt Stories is the people who started the project already knew or at least had a vague idea of how to make level editors ... good luck dude, and if you want it badly enough, it'll happen, keep at it.

Me? Reluctant? I'll post it all for you guys to use if it gets this project stimulated! *Injects caffeine into project* I've been busy making LPs for Mario rom hacks, that's why I've been MIA.

Eww ... rom hacks .. bleh. ... Why not just make your own rom game instead? ... is that alot tougher? ... I think that the day this project actually gets started will be the day that I buy MMF2. And I'm pretty sure that I won't be ready for MMF2 until MMF3 is out! .. lol ... so doubt that I'll even buy 2, (prolly get 3 instead) ... so ... yea ... where is everyone? .. did anyone make some levels for this?

Wiese was kind enough to release some source for it, you'd think that at the very least the one who started this project would make a few levels with it. .... I'll probably give it a try when I'm ready, but that'll be awhile as usual ... maybe in a month or so? ... If it didn't use extensions I'd have already made some levels for it ... but I'm still searching through junk on my computer, trying to organise, and I won't bother with extensions until after that's completely done. I'm just one big excuse aren't I? .. heh.
