COMMENTS

CHRIS:

An interesting idea that's based off, seemingly, those horrible Home Alone films. Evil Santa has arrived, and your job is to really annoy him by setting off traps in the house, or by throwing snowballs at him. The idea is quite novel, but it does get a bit repetitive and frustrating at times. You have to set off a trap, by clicking on it, at exactly the right time. The gameplay is almost trial-and-error, and this sort of gameplay style doesn't really work for me. In terms of presentation and graphics, this game is near faultless. However, there are a few moments of inconsistent graphic styles. The music isn't particularly Christmassy, but it's fine, with suitable sound effects in their right places. SDLY does evoke a nice Christmas feeling, despite the central protagonist being inherently evil. Overall, a reasonable game, with perhaps some more variety needed.

ASSAULT ANDY:

  • The dropshadow on the text makes it hard to read. Don't over use it. This is especially apparent in the tutorial text where it is a real pain to read.
  • Good range of sounds, though I think the intro/menu music is an odd choice. It gives the game a strange feel.
  • Intro movie for HorrendousGames was quite nice
  • The graphics were a weird combination. There some really nice stuff but none of it matched, such as pixel art with vector art. It was all inconsistent, and the title text didn't match either.
  • The mouse cursor active object needs "Destroy if too away from frame" unticked. If you're in window mode and you move the mouse out of the window a tiny bit too far it will be destroyed and you will have no cursor.
  • Camera glitchs at start of level (jumps quickly)
  • The game itself is very very hard, only because you have to know every trap or you can't win. I think it's really quite a good concept, which could have been a lot of fun if it was executed a little better.
  • The code is pretty messy.
  • There was a debugger left in (press D) when I was trying to work out the controls/how to play.
