COMMENTS

CHRIS:

Hatman 2, you get the impression, is a sort of half finished game, perhaps rushed in time to meet the competition deadline. But if you disregard this, what you get here is still a challenging 3-level platformer, with Bibins trademark cutesy sprited graphics. It is a shame that the backgrounds are so bland and empty, but the main spritage is rather nice. Hatman 2 has a unique element to it that puts it in a slightly different category to the standard platformer. Your character can throw his hat, but he can control the elevation manually. It works a little like a frisbee/boomerang, the projectile does, and while it's in motion you can control how far up or down it goes. The mechanics are a little fiddly to say the least, but after a while you'll get the hang of it. The music is suitably retro, but I was never left with a particularly Christmassy feeling while playing this. Yes, there is snow in the first stage, but the Christmas elements are rather lacklustre. The gameplay is quite challenging, as I mentioned, but enjoyable. A solid entry then, but it just feels a little rushed.

ASSAULT ANDY:

  • Solid engine, no real problems.
  • Camera was annoying when you moved left and right quickly.
  • Not very christmassy.
  • Sounds/music fitted the graphical style well. Nice track on the factory level.
  • I had no idea you could move your hat up and down with the arrow keys until the second time I played - hence I couldn't work out how to beat the first boss the first time I played.
  • Pretty good difficulty, hard but fair with a couple of playthroughs.
  • Funny ending, nice effect with perspective object.
  • Code is a bit of a mess, but no bugs.
  • Overall, fun to play. Good job.
