CHRIS:
Another reasonably good entry here which uses a rather unique control system. You control a dog piloting a plane, and his objective is to drop presents down residents homes while avoiding hot air balloons and other dog-related hazards. However, you cannot control the planes horizontal movement; it can only move up and down with some very floaty gravity added for a challenge. It's certainly not a bad entry but it did lack a pick-up-and-play feel which it was almost certainly designed for.
FLAVA:
I've seen a few flash games like this, were you have to use the mouse button to move an object upwards and avoid on-coming obstacles. Though I liked how this
added something else (something winter related too!) in that you had to drop presents off at houses on the way. To begin with, the only obstacles to avoid
are the houses and balloons - but more obstacles are introduced as you progress (and you have to drop off more presents..). The only real downside to this
game for me was that I got very frustrated when I'd crash and have to re-start the level. At one point I even had 19/20 presents and then just clipped the
edge of a house and I'd have to start again. Not that that's a bad thing for the game - after all it presents some kind of challenge for the player. As a
whole though, the levels were generally the same and the only differences where that there were more obstacles and more presents to deliver in the later
levels. This was a nice little game though, and addictive in a weird sort of way.
ASSAULT ANDY:
Firstly, I feel that the transitions in this game are too slow. It is very annoying especially in the options menu when it
takes a long time to get in and out of it. Next, a quick page with how to play would have been nice, I know it tells you how
to play in the Readme, but I'm an example of a person who didn't read it. I crashed my plane straight away and then I
realized it was controlled similarly to those helicopter flash games.
As for the rest of the gameplay it is mostly lacking in something fun. Although the basic idea is good it really just doesn't
present a challenge to the player and there are also no rewards.
All the levels are almost identical with the addition of new flying obstacles. The player has unlimited lives, so dying isn't
an issue besides the frustration of having to repeat a level. I find the presents system quite odd too. Take the first
level for example: You have 20 presents to give out and you MUST give 15 presents to 15 houses. So if you happen to have 9
presents and 10 houses left, it's impossible to finish a level - therefore wouldn't it make sense to automatically tell the
player that he has failed the level? You also can't win a level if you miss a house, but it won't tell you that you have
failed until the end. It doesn't make sense.
Something that would make this game better would be a point system instead of having to deliver presents to all houses.
Pickups floating in the air such as stars or something that give the player extra points might make it more fun. Additionally
the plane should not be located in the middle of the screen but rather very close to the left border, this would allow the
player more time to make decisions of whether to move up or down and would allow the player to see obstacles before they
arrived.
Overall the game just wasn't much fun to play. Maybe it would have done better as a Shoot-em-up with delivering presents as a
bonus points idea. The last levels were too hard as well and just frustrating.
The graphics weren't horrible, but they weren't anything special either. The game felt quite wintery with snow effects and
white everywhere. Programming was okay, however I had glitches with the landing level, It wouldn't move onto the last frame
when I won. A couple of the events could have been done more efficiently and effectively. The music was a bit annoying and
repetitive after a while, however there were lots of sound effects which is good.
