CHRIS:
Now... what would initial impressions be of this game upon looking at the graphical style? "OMG Cave Story? The Underside?" Yes, the style is very reminiscent but it's hardly a problem. The thing is, it looks very nice indeed - although the colours could perhaps be more varied, the game is very blue. I guess the game is loosely based on Cave Story, except that it's not actually in a cave. You control a little chap with an ice gun, which upgrades itself as the course of the game goes on, shooting bad guys such as giant pigs and speedy yellow worms. A basic puzzle element is introduced, in the form of switches, which unveil hidden blocks and temporary blocks to stand on that fade away rather too quickly for my liking. I'm really quite enjoying the game - it sports a very well programmed platform engine but the gameplay can get a bit repetitive. The worst part has to be the music - it's very irritating, especially the initial ditty before it changes halfway through the level. EEWW has already won a GOTW competition - but this Christmas competition is more important! A very good game.
FLAVA:
This is a really good game, but it is let down by little picky things. The game runs very slow for me, and I hear others have had issues too. This could be
something to do with all the snow and backgrounds (however I have seen other games implement this very well). The game was still quite playable for me, but
the slowdowns made it quite frustrating at certain points. Other than that, the game was simple and original in some aspects, and I quite enjoyed it. It had
a really nice winter theme, and the story. I think the locations of save points could have been thought through a bit - they seemed to have been placed in
random places and it got frustrating when I'd complete a big 'challenge' in the game yet no save point was near by. Overall this is a great entry for the
competition, and although frustrating in places, this game was quite enjoyable.
ASSAULT ANDY:
A really damn good Cave Story clone. What more can I say? :P
One really important thing about this game's success is the fact that its an entire piece. This game comes together really
well and all of the menus, submenus, controls, movement... they all fit together well - nothing seems oddly placed.
1 mark off from graphics because they're really cool graphics but things can always be better.
1 mark off from gameplay because I found it to be a bit difficult and confusing at times.
Well done.
