CHRIS:
I'm not sure exactly what to make of this game. At it's heart it's loosely based on the classic Lemmings - however, there are a couple of twists. Firstly, there is only one "lemming" (presumably he's called Gappy), and secondly, you have to collect a number of gems before you can get to the exit. These gems can be pretty difficult to reach, and often, to do so you'll have to use the characters momentum while falling to get them. The third small twist is that you can actually prepare the level with the objects that you do have before the protagonist begins his Lemming-like journey - usually it's around ten seconds - as well as in-game if necessary. Mess it up, however, and you lose a life. The graphics for this game aren't bad. There is a distinct lack of animation but the game is certainly fairly colourful. The presentation is of a pretty good standard too, but the animations are few and far between, and I get the impression that the main menu was rushed. The trouble with Gappy 2 is that most of the levels - despite a nifty tutorial mode - require an awful lot of trial and error, and in the end the game becomes frustrating. It's certainly a novel game but I can't see myself playing it for hours on end.
FLAVA:
This game sorted of reminded me of Lemmings, in that you have to place items down and guide a little guy to the exit. Some of the levels were quite
challenging, but still possible. It'd take me a few times to complete certain levels, while in other levels it was completely obvious what to do. That is not
necessarily a bad thing, and I pleasantly enjoyed this game. The graphics and presentation were not the best, and it would have been nice to have some sort
of text on-screen explaining what each button does. But overall I did find this game quite fun, but it could have added something a bit different to
differentiate it from other games of this style.
ASSAULT ANDY:
Graphics - Pretty decent. They all fitted together quite well. Things could have been done better, such as the walking
animation on Gappy. There were some good effects like the snow, so all in all, good job.
Audio - The tracks were good, but I'm not sure if the chip sounds completely fitted in with the graphical style or feel of
the game. There were also sound effects for most things, which was good.
Gameplay - There was a great deal of puzzles, that's always a good thing for a game like this. The game was quite fun to play
:) The tutorial however was quite tedious and self explanatory. I don't think that it needed to be interactive in the way
that it was. A cutscene styled screen with the basics of placement would have been good, followed by another screen that
briefly showed the objects.
On another note: the transitions are way too slow and the cutscenes are unskippable. The game should save every level rather
than every 10 levels.
Programming - I don't know why, but the springs didn't work on my computer. I had to try it on another computer to get it to
work.
