I'm definately no expert on website design, as some of the geezers in #k&p will no doubt testify...examples being "Circy..your site sucks".

Maybe so, but remember guys, its not always the layout of the site that's important, it's the quality of content that makes a site good. I mean, any idiot could make a website, but what's on it counts. It doesn't have to be graphically stunning (Daily Click) or have the greatest of layouts (Fergs Kliktime), as long as it doesn't have the dreaded Times New Roman as a standard font, you're ready to move on. Tahoma and Verdana are the most presentable fonts to use.

Made your site? Now its time to decide what to put on it. Depending on where you want your site to be aimed, I've created some sections which you can see below.

A Community Site
If you're making a community site, never ever cram as much as you can on a main page. Cafe-lite is a good example of this. Also, never make the website any wider than 800 pixels. Again, Cafelite is an example of this. The majority of PC owners have their PCs set to a resolution of 800x600, and they'll be pretty sick of having to scroll left and right to read text. Of course, you could always make two websites, one in a resolution of 800x600, the other to cater for those few people with big monitors.

Now for the content...You'll need a news page, obviously, a Previews Page, a Reviews Page, complete with downloads, a Forum section and a Tutorials page. Those are the main essentials you need to make a basic community site. It also helps if it's in ASP, as you can make it easier to update.

The Previews page shouldn't go into too much detail about the game..perhaps a storyline or something, and some snippets of information. Plus screenshots.

The Reviews page should have enough information about the game..its flaws should be pointed out, but level it with good things too. A review should at least be 20 lines long, as consistent and large reviews will grab the readers and then they make a decision based on it. Klikketty Klik, as good a site as it was, had two line reviews. Not really enough to make you decide whether its worth the download.

The Forum should be relevant to klik, and try not to stray too far from that. Total Klik had it's Miscellaneous forum..that was ok..but "The Retard Farm?" Ok, some of the stuff inside was funny, but it's not really related to klik.

The Tutorial section should be straight forward. People don't want tutorials on how to use extentions. People want tutorials on techniques like good engines, strafing, flamethrowers and the like. The tutorials should also be as easy to understand as possible. Moving on...

Group Site
The Group site needs to have as much stuff as possible really. More content means more visits. I mean, if you have a classy website, but with one poxy download, it isn't likely to get visits that much (unless the download is something truly exceptionally brilliant).

So anyway, a basic Group Site should have: News Page, Downloads, Projects, Individual Projects, Forum, and a Group Members Page.

News page..fairly straightforward. However, don't update every single day. It sounds weird, but people don't want to read small snippets of information about your game that you've worked on that day. You'd need to update every three to four days roughly, and include what you've done in a larger report.

The Downloads page needs to contain as many of your games as possible. Naturally, dont churn out game after game every week, as the quality is likely to be low. Include seperate pages for each game and explain about them.

The Projects Page is ideal for quick updates..you can modify the page whenever you achieve something new with a project, and say who's making the game.

The Individual Projects Page won't need updating nearly as much..it just contains detailed information on your project, and a couple of early screenshots. Only when you've added something significant to said project should you update with the relevant information.

The Forum Page doesnt have to be too complex. Add a couple of seperate forums: GROUP PROJECTS and GROUP WEBSITE..and possibly a MISC. forum too. Don't create a too complex forum, as your site won't need it.

Member Profiles Page: explains about the members in the group..how they joined..previous projects and general history. Also include their skills, IE: Roofus Slick is an experienced graphic designer.

I hope this helps you to make a better website. If it doesn't then just mock me in #k&p or something..like that's ever not gonna stop
