Inspiration

To learn Construct, I've decided to finish as simple a game as possible. Anyone who's ever worked with me knows that my standards for simple are someone else's standards for epic, but oh well.

Anyway, I asked for a friend for a random idea, she gave me a really good one to work with. It's fleshing out very, very well, just enough that it's been filtered out of the "random ideas" pile into the "stuff to begin working on" pile.

It's actually a bit early stage to start devlogging on this, but some interesting ideas like level design are popping up, and it's worth talking about.

Sounds very intriguing.
X-Com is one of my very favourite games of all time, so anything even vaguely similar will pique my interest.

I really hope you'll be able to create a good scary atmosphere - that's kind of critical for a game like this. Some nice dynamic lighting effects would help a lot...
I'm envisaging something a bit like this: http://cid-b1e7ee094271bbda.office.live.com/self.aspx/Public/Darkness.zip

I think you'll have to a bit careful about the "relying on surprise" and "helplessness between turns" thing.
In X-Com, you have opportunity fire, so you're never really helpless.
If however, there are lots of surprises that you can't plan for, and then you are genuinely defenseless during the enemy turn, then I think it could get frustrating.
Still, it's early days and I'm sure you'll figure all that out.

btw: Is it going to be squad-based like X-Com, or is it just the one character?

Anyway, good luck with it, and keep us posted on development.

I remember you had posted about seeking an artist for this project a while back. Hope you've found someone (or several someones) that you're happy with.

I'm interested to see how you'll translate the tension in horror to the turn-based format. The game will need a little something extra to transform it from an exciting turn-based strategy game with horror elements into an actual horror game...But you've an interesting concept, for certain. Sounds like there are a lot of possibilities.

Best of success to you!

Ha, sorry, been busy with some stuff and don't really visit TDC a lot.

Haven't found a (sprite) artist yet, though I'm planning to get a demo level out before stepping up the search. Right now, we're just writing up the level designs and stuff.

I'll write up a post on the level design later when I have time, and how I plan to make it scary. It's not just atmosphere, though. Mood is more than just atmosphere and dark lighting.
