Translucent pyramids and Minigame PEKOMAN
Posted 2nd Mar 09, by Joellie
Ahh so im on my second level now, and im going to have alot of it going in and out of pyramids and i thought id use the layers to help me out.

Ive made it so that once you enter a pyramid the walls of it becomes translucent so that you can kind of still see it but can see Peko under it, Ive not done much but heres my screen shot.

Image

Its the first time ive ever done this so i think il find a better way to do it when im more into the game!

Image

And the mini game ive been working on, its a complete rip off of Pac Man but never mind im doing it just for my own experiance and it may or may not even be included in the actual game. Who knows! Anyway so far ive made a simple maze, the corns are the things to collect and i havent added any enimies yet as im not sure wether to stick to peko characters or wether to do the traditional ghosts!

I don't know if it's just me, but I think you should put a little more contrast in your graphics overall. Hard to tell what is supposed to be background and what not because everything has pastel colors and is very bright.

BTW sorry I know I'll get a lot haters now for saying this, but honestly why does this game get within 4 months 15 favourite stars?? I see its her first game and all, but sorry to say I can't see anything special about this game. No enemies, no puzzles, no storyline... if you oldschool clickers see something I don't, please tell me what is so special about this game?

@Joellie: I don't want to be mean or destructive on your work. The game looks >OK< and I really hope you keep up the good work! But at this state there isn't much to say about. I just don't get why people give this game so much more attention than other games.

Look, i dont mind constructive critisism, but this argument over my game has happened more than once now and its getting boring, i just dont see why people keep bringing it up im just making a game for fun sorry if people dont like it but im not forcing anyone

And i know about the colours im trying to think of a way to make it different:\ there is a story line you just dont know what happens at the end because it would defeat the point, there are enimies i havent made them yet, give me a chance, and puzzles, ive made ONE level. Your judging my whole game from a 30 second trailer and one completed level which you havent even played.

See i really dont mind people giving constructive critisism but everyones hell bent on dissing it because people have put favs on me, well i dont control people

From the screenshot alone (not in motion) it looks as if you could walk on the outside of that pyramid, but this is just an extension of what Blue was saying. Foreground and background aren't contrasting enough. I do like the overall style of this new areas graphics though, just think it needs some quick tweaking in Photoshop or whatever to seperate the layers a little.

I gotta say it's a shame Blue has to protect himself like that. But we'll all see why momentarily I guess.

Slow down there. You seem to keep completely overreacting when all of the arguments are completely unrelated to liking or hating your game.

The point that Jnuemann myself and Blue66 have been making is that we don't understand why so many people are giving the game so much attention. It's an observation and one that does not warrant such a defensive attitude. No wonder there was an explosion or internet drama before.

Oh and we can only really give criticism on stuff you've actually shown us so far.

I think that it might look better if, since you have that layer of the pyramid becoming transparent, you could have another layer in front of the background layer but still behind that one that appears so that it doesn't look like the pyramid only has one side.

Otherwise it's nice.

Andy, the point is, why is everyone saying it as feed back as part of my updates? I only react because it makes me feel horrible inside when people say it to me. Why is it my fault? Why do you blue and the other guy say it to me like its osmething ive done wrong! I get defensive to protect myself, hence the word defence. I dont want my project to be mainly on one subject of 'This project gets attention for no reason'

Thanks jon and james, yeah i havent perfected it yet and i was going to put something in the inside so thats coming up. I havent perfected the use of photoshop to be able to make it look effective yet so hopefully its something il work on!

And andy, you constantly make me feel like im doing something wrong by posting updates. Wether you mean to or not, i know weve talked in PM and stuff, but everytime one of these arguments pops up your here telling me im the one overreacting when im just defending myself.

I dont know what you want me to say? "sorry il take my project down and give it up if you feel that way"

I like the pixel art, try to darken the colors more so you get more depth in shading.

So far you just shaded the object in different colors, you need to add a lightsource to your game, take the Sun in the top left for example and then add shadows on top of all the sprites. This will make it easier for the player to see what is background and what foreground.

As for the Pyramid. When entering a building it usually is darker inside. Add a black transparent backdrop to the pyramid back. So when you enter it, it does not only appear transparent, but also darker, which makes it more "realistic". Also don't make a sharp cut from outside to inside. Make one brick like 75% transparent, next 50% etc. 2 bricks should be fine for a good transition. Also the Tree should still be visible or make it complete disappear (layer).

And don't give up your project on others. You are doing this for you (right?) and not for others. There are people who may or may not like this game. Thats normal, just continue and keep improving.

HEAT.

anyways, im a bit confused on what the goal is for the invisible walls? is he supposed to be in the pyramid? if so he should be behind the bricks, and the tree in front, and maybe a background for the pyramid... unless im wrong.

sorry im a dumbdumb.

You are Right Dr.James, sorry.

@ Joellie

The problem with foreground / background is a huge issue you should take care of.

Check out http://www.lithiumdream.com/superfrog/remake-20070109.png

And compare it to your game. The Player will be focused on the player figure and the action around it, and everything in the back is "out of focus". That's why backgrounds are mostly silouettes so they do not distract from the action that is going on in the foreground. Keep that in mind otherwise you will have a problem and people will get confused: "Why can't I jump on that ledge, isn't that supposed to be a game element?"

I'm not saying backgrounds should be without details but they should have lower details then any game element in the foreground.

And about the colors. Make sure you have all sorts of colors, from dark to bright, not just bright ones only as currently.

Yeah thats a good point, thanks, i plan to make the shading heavier anyway, it was just a quick idea to show how the pyramids will look.

@chloe Yeah its a bit confusing the pyramids dont have a background yet lol so it looks like theyre just a huge wall!!

I like the effect of hte background as it looks like its a heat wave kind of thing, i know i need to change the colours a bit, but i found that yellow for the sandy bits looks too bright and like a dark yellow looks too brown. EEEEK its hard

I think a darker brick background would do just fine.
Looking foward to see what you come up with though.

Posted by Joellie 3rd March, 2009

Thanks, i think im gonna make it brown rather than sandy, but i had an idea, i might make it so that its really dark that you cant see apart from a fire torch that you carry round and then you have to go around and light all the torches to get out of the pyramid, or something like that, its early days!

Sounds good.
