Haha! It does resemble Bruce Willis as John McClane. No, actually it is a friend of mine named P. Lokey. Hence the Captain Plokey.

You should make the shirt get dirtier as he progresses through the game as a tribute to Mclain!

That would be pretty cool! Actually, there is a bit of a visual change planned for the character. I can't say what as that might ruin some of the surprise.

Halloween Harry was fantastic! Apogee really kicked ass, I was kinda raised on their games - well, the demo versions, at least... but they were pretty generous demos!

I look forward to seeing more of this, the main character looks superb

I'm with you - Halloween Harry was a great game!. I think more than any other platform shooter, that was the one that really set the bar for me. It had a cool main character, great pixel graphics, and fun weapons to shoot. I'd enjoyed Apogee's 2D Duke Nukem's but really thought they stepped up the graphics and gameplay with Halloween Harry.

The other game that I'm emulating a bit here is T h e x d e r from Sierra. I used to play the heck out of that game and can remember the first time I actually got through all 16 levels (without cheats - there weren't any at the time of its release). I really enjoyed the quick transformation aspect of that game - changing from a robot to a fighter jet. Also, the game's enemies all held a common design principle (a red ball) and, with few exceptions, all looked like they belonged in their environment. I have yet to start creating the pixel graphics for this game's enemies, but I may try to build in some sort of similar design principle. I do, however, have reams of notebook pages filled with concept ideas.

Thanks, Neuro! I worked for awhile on the main character to get it just right. It started out as a charicature of a friend of mine but has since moved on from there. I'm also learning (and remembering) quite a bit about pixel animation. I used to use a number of old animation programs in the 1980's (both vector and pixel) but haven't really picked up anything since then. I just finished the climbing animation for the character and spent a fair amount of time figuring out which parts to copy and flip to reduce the effort of redrawing everything. Surprisingly, in 8 frames there was actually A LOT I could copy. I'm very happy with the way it turned out and am considering creating an animated GIF to show.
