Drag, Boredom, Style change
Posted 3rd Aug 10, by Hayo
So, I got too tired of this. Even though these were probably my best graphics, they don't go together too well and take too much of my time to make a big game with it. And I want this game to be big. Also I have been reading too many books on game history, recharging my love for 8-bit styles.

I am currently remaking this game in the engine of Fishhead pocket, with a 32-colour palette. This means the game will look less detailed and sparkly, but more together, and have a more direct feel.

To the people who like my more detailed style better, I am not going to throw these graphics away, I am likely to use most of them in slightly reworked form as sprites and textures in Fishhead 3D.

Maybe not now since you have Pocket, Blueprint, and 3D, but you could always make a shorter platformer with these graphics later.

I completely understand how over time you learn to make better graphics but at the expense of time. Actually that probably goes for everything else related to game development too.

@ OMC: Yeah I might, I still like the character graphics a lot.

@ Andyuk: I think you are right. Things were a lot easier in the old days. We got too pro without having the time of a pro.

I suffered a similar case when I made Jade Phoenix. I used some pretty extensive shading in that game. But for my next game project (FableQuest), I decided that such a shading style would consume too much time, so I completely ditched shading and went with a cutout style for the characters and enemies.

Despite what some people may tell you, most gamers do NOT think that graphics are the most important part of a game. If changing your graphics to a more manageable 8-bit style allows you to spend more time on the gameplay and other areas, then by all means, do it. It's totally worth it in the end.

Actually, to me graphics are really important, I am a perfectionist with them. With the detailed look tho, I was never quite happy with the overall result. The characters look nice, the backgrounds sparkle, the tiles are detailed, but it won't mesh the way I want it to. With a more simple style not only I save time, I actually get happy with the result. The overal screen actually looks as a whole.
