One thing we can agree on is Klik product is very easy to use. We can jump into a project with little planning, work on it for a few weeks (or days), and then along the road, we find that the project is gettting old, another idea pops up, or people don't like your demo, that you decided to abandon it.
Planning a game on pen and paper is very crucial on completing a game. It is not the only way, but significant nevertheless.
When it comes to planning, identify a few key points:
1. Why are you making this game?
* By understanding your reasons behind making this game, you will find yourself more purpose in your work and along comes more motivation.
2. What elements do you want to make in the game?
* Sometimes a Kliker may make levels after levels in a game, only realizing that he probably wanted to add more elements to the character (such as adding a few more special moves or items)- thus he needs to add the elements in each level or not add it at all. By carefully planning out one level, much time can be saved.
3. How many levels do I need?
* By mapping out the levels, you will find yourself with a good estimate of what you need in a game. It is walking a path where you know where to stop and how far you need to travel.
4. How much time do I need?
* Without a limit, a project can drag on for months and maybe years, probably ending it in a folder you never opened rather than showcased on Daily Click =. Give yourself a little pressure.
Here is a brief example on how I planned HeliumMan-X:
1. I make the game because I want to start my career as a shareware developer and that I want to complete a game on a character I enjoy working on.
2. For each level, HeliumMan has 4 cannons, each cannon can hold 20 weapons. He also has 10 built in voice commands. In each level, there will be 5 enemies, they will fall on the screen in certain order as defined by a counter.
3. I planned to make 3 Episodes, ~5 levels each. Episode One is the betrayal of HeliumMan by the Usumo Federation. Episode Two is when HeliumMan embarks on a journey to find the world's strongest weapons. Episode 3 is whoopass time. I also plan to make 20 standard levels, derivatives of the Episodes but with slight modifications.
4. I have 8 weeks to complete this project. The first 2 weeks to build HeliumMan and the first level with all the elements intact. Week 3 is for Episode 1, Week 4 for Episode 2, Week 5 for Episode 3 and connecting all the Episodes. Week 6 is the 20 missions. Week 7 is the main menu and registration info. Week 8 is final checks.
= Hope this helps.
