Yes, 3D modeling programs can do this in less time. But once you've rendered it, it isnt customisible or anything by the user. If you use Jamagic you can have custom flags, change the number of polygons, change the number of ripples, etc, etc, all at run-time by the client. AKA my patriot screensaver that I mentioned in the tutorial.
As far as the GOTW goes, I need to find time where I have an hour or two to spare, because it requires a lot of work. After yesterdays wedding, and working today, I might get a chance tomorrow.
