There are all different stages within the process of making a game that hinder the production. Different people get stuck at different points, and one such point is at the very beginning. The following are tips on getting started on a game that you will enjoy creating throughout. I hope they are helpful to those who need a little boost at the beginning of a game.
GOING BACK TO ABANDONED GAMES) If you don't know what game you want to make, try going back through all of your abandoned games (you know you have a ton) and find the one that you would most like to finish. Chances are there is at least one game you will see and say "why on earth did I quit on this thing?" If you ask that it is a good sign, as long as the answer is not that you quit because it was humanly impossible to make.
EMULATING A PROFESSIONAL GAME) No, this has nothing to do with emulator programs. Yes, it does have to do with "copying". I am sure many will agree that it is not a dirty thing to take an idea from a professional game. This does not mean taking the characters graphics or story! If you really like Mario games then the type of game you might enjoy making best would be a platformer! Emulate the style that inspires you and your game could be a big hit.
EMULATING A KLIK GAME) Now usually complete clones of other klik games are somewhat frowned upon (sigh, another eggit clone!) and that is why you should emulate a klik game for the opposite reasons that you would emulate a professional game. If you think that a klik game someone made is junk, don't just sit around complaining! Show that you can make a better game by doing so. I think that quietly taking a game style and improving on it is a lot more peaceful then flooding a game's creator with insults.
PARODY) If you want an idea, think of something, a game, movie, TV show etc. that you either like or dislike and make fun of it! This is a fun and humorous way to go about making a game and the style of the game will usually come along with whatever you are parodying. If you have characters you like to use then definitely put them in the roles in the parody, or you could create parody versions of the characters from what you are parodying (with funny names hehe).
There you have it. I hope these tips can be helpful for anyone having trouble getting started.
