A load of people seem to hate the MMF picture editor for some reason. Mainly the ones who think TGF is better than MMF for whatever reason they may have. I'm trying to explain why the MMF picture editor is far better.
The interfaces look pretty similar, so I opened them both up and comapred them. People who aren't used to MMF's interface will most likely find it daunting, so you'll need to take a while to get used to it. There's some little differences such as the Project Explorer getting in the way, more than one colour selecting, and the colours being on the bottom.
Advantages of the MMF Picture editor
The Hot Spot and Action Points are tools - no more dragging or selecting stuff from menu.
Ability to have more than one colour selected - you can draw and correct yourself without changing colours. Also, more than 16 colours for the transparent colour.
Circles and stuff start from the corner - you don't need to find out where the middle is first when drawing one.
31 levels of zoom compared to TGF's 4 - from 16:1 to 1:16
A grid feature when zoomed in
Bugs fixed - doesn't jump to top left after pasting for example
Lots of shortcut keys for the tools
Loads of undo levels - TGF only has one
Easier rotating, flipping and resizing
A better What's This? help system which desctibes quickly what you want
More options such as paint density, nib size, discontinuocity, anti-aliasing, and more
The MMF picture editor is far more powerful, but in my opinion it's just as simple after you've gotten used to it.
Some commonly asked questions
How do I change the transparent colour?
Shift-click on a colour in the pallete. This question is very frequently asked, and some people have had a bad impression of MMF because of it. You only had to ask.
You could right-click to select a colour in TGF, but not in MMF. Why did they remove this?
Because MMF can select two colours at the same time, right-clicking only draws with the second colour. Hold down shift and click a colour.
How do I resize stuff?
Go to Objects and select Enlarge Canvas, or use the shortcut Control-W.
It's always prompting me to save and it takes ages!
You can make it Auto-save on close in the section in Preferences.
My shapes keep getting filled in or the lines are dotty!
MMF has many different brush options. Click on the arrow next to the tool and choose the right type of tool that you want.
If you hate the MMF picture editor...
Lots of people think that the picture editor is rubbish, worse than MSPaint, and that the TGF picture editor is far better. I don't find it complicated. You can rearrange MMF's interface and remove all the buttons that you never use. It just takes a lot of getting used to. If you use MMF straight for a week you'll get used to it and never go back. Actually I don't remember anyone complaining about the MMF picture editor with a good reason. Try it if you haven't, or miss out.
