Hi, I've been looking to buy a laptop and a graphics tablet for sometime now. (Only, I didn't know what they were called.) I discovered that Aldis is currently having a sale for a medion laptop (799) and a graphics tablet (?34.99). The only problem is, I can't find any reviews for the products. So, does anyone own one or the other and if not, point me somewhere I can find decent reviews for these things. And, before you ask, yes, I looked at cnet. Thanks in advance.

All platforming problems can be mostly solved here:

These are very excellent examples by other people and are very informative.

What country are you in?
Usually Aldi (well in Aus anyway) have brands that are nowhere else, kinda unknown ones. I don't know how good they are, but I assure you there are better.

You can get a Wacom whatever model it is for $150 in australia. I was going to buy it. I've got a shitty Acecat or some stupid brand one at the moment.

I'd never ever recommend buying anything but an ordinary pc (where you can replace damaged components yourself) from Aldi.

Medion might look cheap, but their price has a price... Their support is continuously amongst the worst ones that get tested in serious mags and I even heard that they try to keep their price low by using hardware having an average lifetime of somewhere around two years (in this case it was about transistors on the laptop's motherboard, so you could basically just buy a new laptop if you were one of the unlucky costumers). Don't buy stuff from Medion or Gericom if you want to keep using it for some time or if you are afraid of being totally raped by the nearly inexistent support. I heard that Toshiba sold some pretty good quality stuff, and I got a Fujitsu Siemens T3010 myself and I'm absolutely excited by FSC's support which replaced my complete display in about a day when it needed to (and I got 3 years warranty without having to pay more etc.). My dad told me that he once had some Acer notebooks but wasn't really satisfied with them, guess Acer's somewhere around the average level you'd expect... They're a bit cheaper, but the quality's still at least all right.

If you want a tablet, I'd go for Wacom. I think they've got a patent for their technology, so they're the only ones selling systems that don't require batteries. I got a GraphireČ for my desktop PC and I'm absolutely happy with my Tablet PC (which is Wacom stuff, too)... Batteries tend to stop working when you need them the most, so that's basically why I tend to go for the brand here, never used anything else, but Wacom never gave me any reason to be unhappy with their products.

I'd rather buy something that doesn't have a stupid, way too small joystick in the middle of its keyboard.

Also, my IBM HD crashed after just 4 years and took a lot of my work with it, with no chance of getting it back... The guys at my computer store told me that's a "common problem with IBM HDs" - so there's absolutely no way I'll buy something by IBM again.

That sounds like an isolated case, seeing as IBM is one of the worlds largest companies. Anyway, there are only a few mfg's making harddrives and chipsets, and every company uses the same basic parts, so you won't get anything different.

Oh, and Robboomer, i suggest www.ubid.com/ for computers, I love them and I just bought a brand new top of the line PC for $1,000 less than the mfg's price.
