I guess the future of RPGs seem quite bleak. The true ones where you get to think at least, not the mindless FF style or CRPGs. Now that Interplay's down, there's only Troika, inXile, and Bethesda to hope on for commercial games.
I really hope they don't turn Fallout 3 into "Morrowind with guns" though. Damn, I hate Morrowind. Nice epic, but it's far too serious, and the user interface takes far too much of the screen. And I'm not at all fond of the heavy focus on reflexes. However, the Vampire: The Masquerade series did it well.
Klik RPGs aren't really anything to look forward to either. Too many goddamn FF style games. The RPG Maker ones are far, far worse.
Oh well, I guess there's just that game I'm working on to look forward to. And maybe a hope that Fallout 3 isn't being made purely for profit..

ive liked rpgs since ages ago. Er Buck rogers countdown to doomsday on the Megadrive was probably my first taste of an rpg.
anyway i hate morrowind (i got it free with my graphics card) but like the final fantasy series so im looking forward to no 12 which will infact have realtime battles in the style of online rpgs apparently.
I really wish someone would make somethin' like Deus Ex. That's probably the only American RPG I was ever able to get into... that and the old DOS Lord of the Rings game. FF games definitely need to go though. There's nothing "fun" about the Final Fantasy gameplay; the only reason you'd want to play one is for the storylines. We can do better folks... heck I should put my money where my mouth is and make one myself.
Last time I had lobster, it reminded me of biology class. Except in biology class the professor didn't make you eat the frog when you were finished.
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga (PS2) -- Atlus
Suikoden IV (PS2) -- Konami
Tales of Rebirth (PS2) -- Namco
Jade Empire (XBox) -- Bioware
The Ark of Napishtim (PSP) - Konami
Side-note: Deus Ex wasn't an RPG. It was a first-person action game with level ups and NPC interaction... at least that's my opinion, I could be wrong.
I agree with Ben, there needs to be a new Deus Ex-esque game... and let's hope Fallout 3 doesn't suck.
And yeah, Final Fantasy is awful. 80% of the time is spent watching cutscenes and the rest is spend fighting monsters to get strong enough to fight more monsters.

Alot of things are still very temp. so these screenshots arent preview's of the actual final project. The GUI of alot of gameplay window's is subject to alot of change, expecially the battle screen. (There are no offline battle's yet, so those screenshots are from an actual online battle.)
So anyway, yeah, I've gotten alot complements on the game so far, tell me what you think about it.
Probably wouldn't be wise for me to say TSE 4: Oblivion, seeing as most of you don't like Morrowind, I have to say I'd love Morrowind, if I have a long time to play it otherwise it is really bad to play. It requires a lot of dedication something alot of people I know have. But then again I think its the best game in the genre the only "true" RPG (not 3rd person action/adventure).
you know all games can be categorised as Rpgs since you are playing the role of the character.
thats why i think its false to say that games like Morrowind are true rpgs.
Why arent final fanstasy or Zelda role playing?
Well, computer RPGs are typically those descended from pencil & paper RPGs, which differ a lot from other non computer games (because you're not hitting a ball with something). So Zelda and the like are really just action adventure. Zelda 2 sort of blurs the line a bit though.
Master or Orion 2 is the best in my opinion, but Dues Ex and Sysem Shock 2 are up there as well. My fav RPG is still Breath of Fire 2, I just wish Capcom would make a new non-sucking Bof game.
ive had deus ex for ages and never played it, also i bought golden sun a while ago and got about 30 minutes into it. Infact ive got loads of games ive half finished.
