Or save it as .bmp then use this:

Also if you hold Alt while you press Print Screen, it only captures the current window instead of the whole screen

Using bmps on your screenshots should be grounds for being the kid in purple shirt in Lazarus's pic. They take long to load even on my 1mbit connection, I can't imagine how long it would take on a modem.

get a program called 'irfanview' then paste the screenshot into it, you can do tons with it including converting into 256 colours and saving as loads of different file types (some ive never seen or used anywhere else)

Phizzy, that ain't not isn't true. PNG has a similar compression to zip so it would still be smaller, even if you use loads of colours

Irfanview ROCKS!
I once converted a 16-bit image to 16 colors and it still looked nice...
Anyway, press printscreen to take a screenshot of the entire screen, press alt+printscreen to take a screenshot of ONLY the active window, and remember to cut out the windows windows because they look ugly in a screenshot.

Do as everyone has already said and press Print Screen while the game is running.
But I suggest you paste it into Photoshop and choose "Save for Web" then save it as a GIF for regular 256 color games and JPEG for games that use more colors.
Mendokuse...
