Hey everyone.
I just listened to a new 'rock opera' Rasputin (starring John Hurt and Ted Neely) which examins the life and death of the infamous Russian peasent Gregori Rasputin.
This show seems to hint that Rasputin was a good man. I searched further on the subject and found that he was a sex-crazed monk who wore stained and soiled clothing, got drunk constantly, and did horrible things (I'd be kicked off if I go any further)... And yet he still was considered a preacher or a 'Holy Devil'.
What do you think of Rasputin? Do you think he was a gifted man, a charletton who exploited the royal family of Russia?
Sorry to get the old cogs in the mind a-workin' again. But school starts soon.
Fine Garbage since 2003.

Rasputin was a complete nutjob. Beyond that it's hard to paint an accurate picture of him because he's become so encroached in fokelore and superstition. However I don't think you'll ever find many sources that don't describe him as evil. His preachings were based along the lines of "the more you sin, the more you can repent, and repentance is good, therefore you must sin". Mad as hats. There's a made-for-TV film starring Alan Rickman as the titular monk which I found to be pretty interesting.

Rasputin may have been a nutjob, but his home-made rice pudding was second to none.

I think we watched that movie about Rasputin in school while learning about Russian history. We also learned that Rasputin was very hard to kill. First, he was poisined, soon after his assasins realized he wasn't even hurt, he was poisined again. Then when he still wouldn't die they shot him many times (like 5 or 6 times I think). That slowed him down enough for them to tie him up and throw him in the river. When his corpse was found, the cause of death was found to be drowning, but they noticed that before he drowned he had untied the knots he was tied with.

I heard that story, too. He sounds evil, although some people still see him as a saint.
They found his hand- it's in perfect condition and it still bleeds.

Rasputin...sounds like raspberry-flavoured pudding. I don't know anything about him though.
