Yeah, the background system object method is the most common way, as it can move behind background objects (that's true, right? I've never actually used the object.)
You can also get a decent parallax with the text blitter (sorry, I just love the text blitter), but it also requires making a tile-based engine and an editor and such to work.

Yes, that's right. You have to make sure that it's always set to the back, though, as background objects can either be in front of or behind it.
What I've never understood is the actual intended purpose of the background system object. It works fine for parallax backgrounds, but I've no idea what the effect of all the other stuff in the dialog box is.
