Ask a quick question with reguards sounds and art work for your games.

I cant draw very well never mind make good sprites and my music / sounds ability *cough cough* that sucks more than my art work.

So is it fine to "borrow" sounds, and graphics from other games so that I can make mine ?

My friend says its easy to borrow what I need off the net and that would slove my problem.

what do you lot think, should I borrow the sounds / graphics ?

I have a cool idea, hopefully a good story line and I am ready to go learn how to use MMF, just got it today.
Only thing holding me back is the sound / graphic problem, < and the fact i have not used MMF before lol, hopefully that i can learn quickly >

That doesn't really make sense, saying the only thing you can't do is graphics and music, and how to use the program. And no, ripping graphics is not ok.

Heh after re-reading my post it doesn't make much sense.

What I am trying to get at is, I really want to learn to use MMF, as a hobby now that I have to stay at home a lot to mind the kids.
But the problem I have is I have all these great ideas for a game but no skill at all in the sound, graphic and coding deptments. The coding I will learn by trail and error and by hopefully getting help from you lot when I get stuck, But the graphics and sound is something I dont think I could ever learn to do, I just dont have the ability for that.

So if its not excepted to borrow sounds / graphics how do I get around my lack of ability ?

You can only use someone's graphics and sounds with their express permission, unless they've released their work to the public domain (but you'd still need to accredit it). Phizzy's right, use library graphics to get started or get them drawn for you. Don't steal.

Ok pretty much what I thought, use borrowed stuff for learning and testing ideas only, and make my own or beg someone to help when ready to release my game

With reguards sounds, do you know any good websites where I can get public sounds, dont really want to use stuff from other peoples games.

thanks again for the advice guys, didnt want to start out here on the wrong foot by doing something thats not accepted.

Welcome!

I'm pretty sure most of the people here learn mmf/tgf/knp coding by trial and error. The same goes to graphics. I can't do a decent sprite initially too. All it needs is practice. What i'm trying to get across is that the best way to get around your lack of ability is time and practice.

It depends on what kind of negative feedback you want.

If you make a game with all-original everything, people will complain because they couldn't figure it out, unless all you've done is give a fresh coat of paint to something that, from a gamelay standpoint, is completely derivative of something that everyone already likes, in which case, everyone will love it.

If you admit to using ripped or library sprites/ music/ sounds/ whatever, people will point it out in the comments section just to show how observant they are.

If you try to pass off others' work as your own, people will basically treat you like the antichrist. If you rework sprites to make them different, people will begin a crusade to expose you as a fraud. It will be a big CSI-style investigation, except without anything resembling a resolution or interest from viewers.

Basically, Sega's probably not going to send special agents out to burn your house down for making a lousy freeware Sonic fangame, but it would obviously be best to develop something all your own. As a tip, working in a high resolution (640x480 or higher) will only expose how terrible your artistic ability is. Try to work in something lower, like 320x240. It will give your game more of a retro feel, and people won't expect too much from the graphics. Hell, the original Game Boy had a resolution of 140x102 and used four shades of grey on a green screen. Try making your own original Game Boy-style games, or pick an old favorite system of your own, find out what resolution it used and how many colors it used, and try making your own.

Its only ok to borrow sound and graphics if you intend to give them back.
