Following the long line of 3D modeling first try's and stuff, I have submitted my own 3D artwork. Please ignore the watermarks, I haven't decided weather I want to spend 200$ on the program that I used.

EDIT: Now rendering a new camera angle ...
I "modeled" everything. Well, it really depends on what you call modeling. I created the depth map for the landscape, and I customised the text to make it look just right. I created the text's texture and edited the landscape's. I added the clouds to the scy in the first picture, and I'm lending about 20 minutes of my computers proccesing power per picture for rendering. It's not as easy as you think, although some people may not count it as "modeling".
You slap a height map in, color the sides if needed, & put text in. Real 3D modeling would be like, carving out a box to create a person or an object. Terrain is very simple to create, & I'm not even saying to go out & buy a large 3D modeling program. You can just go out & snag a free copy of Maya (if they still have a free edition that is, I haven’t checked) & start roughing out a true model after your learn the basics.
As much as I feared this day would come, but I actually agree with Phizzy on this. We are both being honest, you cant honestly stick up for renders that take minutes to make. I'd be pretty sad to see someone spend hours on a landscape that can be created through seeds on a program, honestly.
I know, it's really my first scene, so I was just trying all of the features out and moving all the slidey things to random places and seeing how it looked in wireframe. With some tweaking they could probably be made much better, but at 20-30 minutes a piece to render I just don't think i'll find the time to do that. I only posted them here to see what I could improve on and what I should change in this, or a later 3D model.
This thread is a bit insane! I would say try terragen. If the two images you showed are anything to go by, then terragen can do a lot better. And plus it's free- no watermarks. Only problem is it's a beta and a little unstable.
