Okay, some of you may know but late in development of Hasslevania I had an idea that each weapon you had could also have a secondary, magical power you could cast at a rather large cost (so these powers couldn't be abused too much). So I thought I had it all figured out, and it seemed to work okay for awhile..
Anyhow, it turns out that the side-effects in the code from having spells is a real nightmare- where Rovert gets stuck or freezes or something else goes wrong somewhere almost every time I play it. I've tried fixing things almost every day since I first noticed something was up with it weeks ago.
It's really hampering the development of a lot of other things that I could be doing with the game (like RELEASING the thing, for one), and although I wanted to stick with it and fix the spells I wonder know if I should just get rid of them altogether. Ever since I put them in, it changed the gameplay dramatically in a lot of ways. Offensive spells could effect everything on the screen, some boss fights were made much easier, you could now heal yourself instead of trying to search some far-off wing of the castle looking for an apple to help- It almost doesn't even feel like the same game that I've been playing / testing since February.
It'd be so easy to just get rid of them- Two groups of events, 2 event lines for each frame, and 4 or 5 active objects. My question is: Would it be a deal breaker? They didn't exist for most of the time anyhow, and it would restore a lot of challenge that I originally wanted it to have. On the flip side though a lot of player versatility goes out the window, as well as the ability to warp to the shop from most anywhere (where you can buy health power-ups back).
If I were to completely remove spells / the spellbook, I would have to make it up in some other way, maybe a new area or two I dunno. None of my RL friends are into what I do as far as games are concerned, so I figured I'd ask to see what people think about it here and thanks

If the code is being really annoying like that then I would probably cut out the magic etc. I usually get tired to messing around in the event editor trying to get soemthing to work after a few days. If you were to discover a way around it then by all means keep it in! It's always good to have a little variety in a game.
I'm sure it'll be good weather the magic is in there or not Good luck with your project!
Yeah, you're probably right. It's been way more than a few days, and I seem to have either freezes or other weird spell effect (or MMF?) bugs that won't go away. I think if there's a sequel I'll put them in there, but not this time. Thank you

Yeah, take them out. New features ppl think up usually screw with the gameplay in a way that you don't realise until later. Put in an expansion pack, that's what the pros do

Yep, they're all out now and I couldn't be happier. (Weird huh?) The game is a lot more solid now. While I had to go through all the frames anyway I also fixed the devil for hire's code to be more stable and made him move faster to attack enemies.
I left the weapon book in there but it serves a different purpose now. You can still read it from the continue menu, only this time it just gives weapon descriptions and some tips. Because it's magic, when you get it Rovert's melee damage for all weapons gains a permanent +1 bonus, which is huge in this game.
ETA For Hasslevania? I would guess maybe another month? Sorry, but these spells and the good gravity set me back a lot. I haven't even made a new room in over 3 weeks! This is also assuming that the next voiceover session(s) go over a lot better than the last one did.
