Okay, okay, now bear with me please but tonight when I went to turn on my "game" computer it just looks.. off. Sorta' greenish, a wee bit off to the rightish, reds look almost black..

But first, some history of my setup. I have a single monitor and two computers. One of these computers is pretty old (500MHz, 256RAM, 56K) and is the one that I use to go online and etc. The other one is way better (2.4GHz IIRC) but I only use it to make games on and it never ever goes online and has never even been hooked up either. Since we use both computers almost every day, I unplug / plug in the monitor from one to the other a lot.

So.. anyways tonight it all looks bad and now I think maybe all this plugging and unplugging maybe has damaged something. I am ALWAYS careful about plugging in the monitor to the back of the computers (as to not bend / break the pins and etc.) I checked and all of the pins are there and fine. I've tried to mess around with the color options on the monitor and nothing worked. Then I plugged the monitor into the crappy online computer and voila everything looks just fine (which means it's not a monitor problem, it's my good computer).

Anyways, what do you guys think may have happened? Seriously, the last thing I did on the good computer was work on Hasslevania two days ago and I didn't do any foul sorcery or install anything weird or whatever. The computer has always had the generic built-in factory video card and it's always been fine. Is it possible the card screwed up somehow? Is it possible the female side of the monitor jack is screwed up somehow?

Has anyone ever turned on their computer and it just looked way off for no good reason?

(What a doozy, a n00b I am.)

THANK YOU ! ! ! !

I didn't read everything so forgive me! But could the cable be loose? If you fiddle around with a VGA cable (and SCART) you can get some lovely/broken colours. Not sure if DVI does this or not. My computer has a mini DVI so I can't really test it.

Sorry I didn't read everythign either - so tired. May sound silly but do you have any magnets next to your monitor? You can make some awesome colours on a monitor by placing a magnet next to it!

... prolly not a good idea tho.

magnets outside of the ones of monitors mess it up. if its a liquid crystal display, like a flat panel magnets shouldnt do anything to the monitor. now near the actual computer may cause problems. .

have you tried unplugging everything and hooking it all back up. maybe use a different outlet? are you using a surge protector? maybe your comp is fried

I had the same thing on a computer of mine, and it was the monitor cable. The red carrier cable is broken, no red colors. It could be that when you plug it into the other computer you bend the cable a bit and the connection is back. Try bending the cable different ways and see if the reds come back on the new computer.

You know what, this sounds like it may be it. When adjusting the RGB, I didn't notice any diffences when I was adjusting the red at all, but green and blue seemed to work okay. At least it's a start, and it'd be way better than it being a problem with my good computer too.

Thanks!

I'm a bit late, but yeah, it's most likely the cable. I've had it happen before and everything went purple and stuff.

I hate it when stuff like this happens to my ink cartridge. Except then of course itś just a lack of ink, not a cable being plugged incorrectly.
